GLENDALE, ARIZONA --- Arizona Coyotes Owner, Chairman and Governor Andrew Barroway issued the following statement today regarding Shane Doan.

"After serious consideration, we have decided to not offer Shane Doan a contract for the upcoming season. The time has come for us to move on and to focus on our young, talented group of players and our very bright future. This was a very difficult decision given what Shane has done for the Coyotes and his unparalleled importance to the organization. With that said, this is necessary to move us forward as a franchise.

"On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to sincerely thank Shane for everything he's done for the Coyotes on and off the ice the past 21 years. Shane is a Valley icon who had an incredible career and was one of the best captains to ever play in the NHL.

"Shane deserves an enormous amount of credit for keeping the Coyotes in the Valley and for growing the game of hockey in Arizona. He is beloved by our fans, corporate partners and the media and has been a tremendous leader for us in the community, and a great role model for kids. We wish him and his family all the best in the future. He will be a member of our Pack forever."

The Coyotes have parted ways with longtime captain Shane Doan, a source said, as the organization told the 40-year-old Saturday morning that he's no longer part of the organization.

Doan was set to become an unrestricted free agent due for a new contract.

Doan was thanked for his service and time, the source said, explaining that the organization is "getting rid of everything old and going in a different direction."

Defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson will be named captain, the source said.

Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway released a statement early Monday afternoon that said Doan will be a "member of our Pack forever."

With that said, this is necessary to move us forward as a franchise."

News of the move involving Doan followed a flurry of activity over the weekend involving the Coyotes.

On Saturday, the team traded goalie Mike Smith to the Calgary Flames.

On Sunday, the Coyotes released the list of players the team will expose in the NHL expansion draft, which included forwards Jamie McGinn and Brad Richardson.

Makes sense, Coyotes need to move away from him. Same thing is gonna happen with the Sedins next year. Doan represents the past for the Coyotes while the team needs to embrace Max Domi, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Clayton Keller, etc as their future. It's a passing of the torch. He's a great player and I won't be shocked if he signs with a cup contender this summer.

Id like to see the Canucks sign him only 1 million a year though.

Why?  So that he can take up the roster spot of a developing player?  We already have our own veterans to mentor the youth.  We don't need extras.
