[Rumour] Tampa Bay has side deal with Vegas to protect their young D men. Possibly sending Garrsion, Sustr plus prospect.

Hearing the Lightning has a side deal with the Vegas Golden Knights to protect one or more of its young defensemen.

Those types of trades won't be announced until Wednesday, so details aren't available yet. GM Steve Yzerman neither confirmed nor denied whether he has a side deal.

"It's not something I'd share publicly at this time," Yzerman told the Times.

But it certainly makes sense for Tampa Bay to try to find a way to hold onto both Slater Koekkoek and Jake Dotchin, both of whom were left unprotected.

Dotchin, 23, helped solidify the top-four in the second half of last season, joining Victor Hedman in the top pairing. Koekkoek, 23, was the 10th overall pick in 2012, and had a strong finish to the season in AHL Syracuse and should get a shot to crack the lineup next season. Both are restricted free agents.

The Lightning protected Hedman, Stralman and Braydon Coburn as the third 'D'.

As for the return, the Lightning could package a veteran defenseman - like a Jason Garrison or Andrej Sustr - with a prospect. Tampa Bay has several young promising forward prospects in their system coming out of junior. The Lightning also has two second round picks in this year's draft.

It was already reported that the Canucks will not be making any deals with Vegas and will lose whatever player is selected.

Really? They're not going to offer a pick to protect Jack Skille?

If I'm Vegas, and I see the Canuck scraps, I might just offer a draft pick or two because I feel sorry for the poor nucks

Benning better not pay anything stupid to have Gaunce/Sbisa/Boucher not taken.

We aren't going to lose anything of value in the expansion draft!  After looking at what was exposed, Sbisa is almost surely not going to be taken by Vegas.  The 30 players chosen can only have a max-salary of $73 million - and there are a ton of way better options than Sbisa.  Taking him actually harms Vegas.  They need the $4 million of space a lot more than they need Sbisa.  From the ~5 teams with the worst offerings (like us), they are better off taking the best player on the smallest contract, in order to keep their total-salary down.  Which means we are probably losing Gaunce.

And Gaunce can go down to their farm team without waivers.

The difference is the GMs that are protecting their assets are doing so because they have QUALITY assets. We just have...uh...players?

Sbisa isn't worth much, Gaunce has 1 NHL goal in 77 games...and Boucher...eh
