Stepan and a back up for the 7th OA and a near blue chip D prospect (no matter how maligned he is)

I am sure we have/had pieces comparable to that........

Raanta isn't a backup. He is/was the same as a Martin Jones, Scott Darling who once given a chance will probably be a great starter

If I'm reading it right, NYR currently has 20M in cap space???  They have more than enough to bolster their roster still.  Maybe 7th OA for Tanev isn't outta the question?  Then they sign Shattenkirk, and still have cap left over.

They only have 17 players of their 23 man roster signed though. They have a couple of RFA's that will get raises, Shattenkirk will likely get around $7M, so adding Tanev's $4.5M would make their cap a lot tighter than it would currently appear.

canucks could take back staal with the difference in salaries retained.

Unfortunately one wonders if all the rumors about him during his Jr. career/draft year were indeed true - attitude problems........?

There aren't just rumors. Kid racially abused his own teammate and violated team policy regarding derogatory racist, sexist and homophobic language on more than one occasion. I hope he has matured since then but considering he finds himself on his third team already doesn't give me much hope.

If he was playing behind Lundquist.

aight well your statement "Raanta is just a backup" makes it seem like they're trading for someone like Zatkoff or Lack whose role now and in the future is a backup without a chance of being a starter.

Technically he was a backup. Just like Talbot was a backup.

For people wondering what is going on today. The NHL only has trades on 2 days every year. Draft day & Deadline day. With sometimes major but pretty much nothing resembling a consistent quantity of trades on any other particular day or time frame. This is why the NHL has fast become one of the most boring leagues in North America. Nothing to keep you involved in the league and players outside of the games. So easy to fix, but they won't.

Measure Markstrom vs Raanta career for career whike factoring in the teams each goalie played for.

Raanta is/was a back up

Raanta is clearly better than Markstrom. And to eliminate the teams they play for, judge a goalie by their save percentage. Markstrom is a fringe starter while Raanta actually is an NHL calibre starter. Quit being a homer.

trade deadline day isn't nearly as busy as it was pre cap era. A lot of years not much happens.

Bizarro. ARZ is actually spending money to win now. That's actually kind of cool to see.

Basically moved down from #7 to #23 to upgrade from 30yo left hand C Hanzal to 27yo right hand C Stepan. With a cap hit exceeding the salary for 3 more seasons.

+ Raanta who is 47-23 in 92GP playing back-up to Lundqvist.

Good pieces for ARZ.

NYR get #7 + $6m extra to sign someone. Probably Shattenkirk.
