All worthy candidates. But I'm going to go off the board and suggest the Washington Capitals. With the losses of Shattenkirk and Schmidt, they certainly have a spot for him, and they are still going to be a competitive playoff team.

My guess is NYR. All the same play off implications are there, if not more.

Rumours are Holden will be traded for a C. Which leaves a 3rd pairing LHD, who subs on the PP role open. DeAngelo is the only competition. And even then, if someone gets injured there looks a pretty open roster spot.

Just curious: have the Canucks ever lost a college prospect like this? It seems like we have a good track record with actually getting our NCAA guys to sign here.

RJ Umberger "kinda" he left school then didnt sign with us and we traded him. So kinda but other then that I can't think of anyone.

If Butcher is the kind of player that needs to be gifted a spot in a line up and not earn a spot I'd pass on him. Yes he may turn out great, or he may be a Shultz in Edmonton... Just my opinion. Also he must really not like Denver, or he thinks that the management is that bad in Colorado that he would prefer to move out of state

From the Denver Post this April.  Not the first article suggesting that Roy complicated the relationship.

A year ago, when Butcher was an alternate captain for DU at the Frozen Four in Tampa, Fla., the Avs had a team executive inform Butcher’s family adviser (agent) that the player would not be signed by the club. The message was believed to have originated with Patrick Roy, the former Avs coach and front-office executive who was not interested in using a contract for a 5-foot-10, 180-pound defenseman. But Roy resigned in August and the Avalanche showed substantial due diligence in scouting Butcher at numerous games DU home games this season.

Yeah, seems like the Avs kinda made their own mess on this one. Butcher actually attended three development camps (on his own dime due to NCAA rules) with Colorado. He was rewarded with the team apparently telling his agent they had no interest in signing him and would wait until summer 2017 (when his rights expire) before making any decisions. Not an advisable way to handle a college draft pick IMO.

Would be like us telling Gaudette we won't even consider giving him a contract until 2019 (and even then giving him no guarantees). And then being surprised that he decides to pursue free agency.

Thankfully, with Gaudette the Canucks have been clear since his sophomore year that they want to ink a deal. And they've also been very respectful about supporting Gaudette's decision on how long he wants to play college hockey. He knows there's a deal waiting for him whenever he wants to go pro (and he's stated he expects to sign in 2018 following his junior year).

Colorado could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by taking a similar approach with Butcher. There've been reports that he would have been willing to sign with them last summer following the completion of his junior year. But instead, the Avs decided to tell him a deal wasn't on offer and that they would wait out the final year of his draft rights. Butcher goes back to college and puts up a monster year winning a boatload of awards (and becoming a highly coveted commodity in the process). And then the Avs are left with nothing after he decides to wait the few months necessary to reach free agency and choose his own destiny.

We will be in it to the very end and then we will not get him. The sad cycle we have to endure it seems majority of the time

Stecher and Hutton are wondering why you forgot about them.
