      Forum-specific Rules   07/11/2017

These are board specific rules for the Trades and Rumors forum designed to provide organization and a better experience for everyone. Please review these rules before posting new threads.
THREAD ETIQUETTE   1. Please search for an existing thread before posting. This forum can be very fast moving, so it's understandable if redundant threads are inadvertently posted. In such a case, please use the report feature to request removal of redundant threads.    2. Provide a clearly identifiable topic title so that users can readily understand the content. The title should include any and all teams involved, as well as player names or other personnel involved as appropriate.   3. All trades, signings, rumors and other news MUST include a linkable source. Simply posting the name of the source is not enough. Effort should also be made to copy and paste the full article, or at the very least the relevant portion of text from the source to the first post of the thread. Moderators may remove low-quality threads in favour of high-quality threads.

Affixed to the front of your title should be a label that identifies the type of transaction that is taking place. For all trades use [TRADE]. For all signings use [SIGNING]. For all waiver-wire transactions use [WAIVERS]. For all rumours use [RUMOUR].
For articles or news items that don't fit into the above categories, affix an appropriate label of your choice such as [NEWS], [ARTICLE] or [MISC].   4. When the status of a thread changes a new thread can be created. The new thread should reflect the change and help focus the discussion on current events. e.g. Someone may create a new thread when a rumor becomes a trades. The old thread will be locked by the moderating team.    5. Do not misrepresent the contents of your thread or post false trades or rumors. Trolling will result in a permanent suspension.

SOURCES   The following source types are considered INVALID. Any links to posts or threads on other message boards Any links to personal blogs Any news heard on the radio that does not have a link to an audio vault or podcast Any news seen on television that does not have a link to online video Any news spread by word of mouth
Additionally, certain sources may be be blacklisted due to poor credentials, clear traffic-mongering etc. Blacklisted sources will be posted here.
Thank you for your co-operation and please PM the Administrator or Moderators if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions regarding this forum.

[Discussion] NCAA Free Agent Frenzy! (Sort of)

Recommended Posts

It's August 15th, and those players who are finishing up their NCAA careers and moving on from the teams that drafted them are now able to sign with whichever teams they like.

Now, I don't have the pageantry of TSN or SN, but I'm hoping to add some hype to this small bit of hockey related news in the long off-season.

The big fish:

D  - Will Butcher

The Colorado Avalanche are about to officially lose the rights of the type of player the Colorado Avalanche could really use right about now: a blue-chip defence prospect.

Will Butcher is the reigning Hobey Baker Award champion, an excellent mover of pucks, the captain of an NCAA championship team, and a 22-year-old who can sign to any one of the 31 NHL teams he chooses once the clock strikes midnight.

That Butcher must join the league at an entry-level price means the phone of his agent, Brian Bartlett, will be buzzing. Such was the case of star college graduates like Jimmy Vesey, Kevin Hayes, and Justin Schultz in recent Augusts past.

A steadily improving standout for the University of Denver, Butcher was selected by the Avalanche back in fifth round of the 2013 draft but never signed a deal with the team that finished in last place in 2016-17.

Unlike the bulk of NHL rookies, he now has the power to choose his own adventure.

Butcher put up an impressive 37 points over 43 contests as a slick-passing senior and, in late July, Bartlett announced that his client would be exploring all options.

F - Alex Kerfoot

On-ice, Kerfoot is a tempting target as well. After minimal minutes in his freshman year, Kerfoot has put up better than a point-per-game in each of his three subsequent seasons at Harvard. This past season, he proved that his production wasn’t dependent on departed linemate Vesey by doubling his career-high in goals with 16 and totalling 45 points in 36 games.

The caveats for Kerfoot are two-fold: size and age. He’s just 5’10” and 174 lbs, and he’s going to be 23 years old at the start of the 2017-18 season. Already, he’ll be nearing the upper range in age to still be considered a prospect.

For Kerfoot, a centre, the Canucks may not look very inviting. They have Henrik Sedin, Bo Horvat, Brandon Sutter, and Brendan Gaunce down the middle, as well as Sam Gagner and Alexander Burmistrov. Meanwhile, they’ve got Elias Pettersson and Adam Gaudette waiting in the wings, so to speak, so the path to the Canucks lineup at centre won’t get any easier in the years to come.

Sid is Me found some interesting stuff on some of the other players available. His post is here:

Aside from the big 2, I think there could be some interesting depth options for Utica. Blaine Byron put up point per game numbers,  despite his limited starts Evan Cowley has some sick numbers, and a big guy like Ben Storm is always worth exploring.

@SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME has me intrigued on some of these other D players... we don't really have a roster spot for D this year so picking up a guy thats happy to continue in Utica seems ideal.

Has anyone here seen Kerfoot play? Would he have any chance of making the 23 man roster?

I'm sure Butcher has his list of teams whittled down to a very small handful.  Now it's up to him to decide which team will he be happiest with along with which one gives him the best opportunity to play and maximize his value.

Butcher does not impress me. Its a free wallet so I won't complain but I doubt he becomes anything more than a 3rd pairing D.

Yes, Kerfoot is more of a project, would not crack the 23 man roster. I'd say upper limits is bottom 6 with solid leadership abilities IMO, but who knows, with some good coaching anything is possible.

A couple questions

Why wouldn't a player like butcher sign with the team that drafted him?  Even if a player doesn't want to play for that team what about the  contract? That's alot of dough he's given up over the last 4 yrs no?

Secondly. Why aren't these guys considered overagers if he's 22.

Is that league like playing in the ahl

Can we sign some please? A free potential Tanev would be nice. I'm sure playing in the city is a huge plus for anyone that likes a good quality of life... not to mention, we're a pretty easy roster to crack.

MG was a genius...

In before someone says Jimbo is a genius for bringing in Troy and then me replying that he wanted to play in Van anyways since he's from here lol

Nothing happening today. Rights expire August 15th. Free agency for these players starts August 16th (tomorrow).

From CBA Article 8.6.c.i&ii:

"The drafting Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for his services through and including the August 15..."

I would like to see them take a flyer on a guy like Gage Ausmus

5th rounder from 2013 drafted by SJ.

has size (6"2-210), works like a freak, has amazing leadership skills, named captain of UND as a junior and an incredible work ethic, and also a good buddy and former team mate of Brock Boeser

He's signed with the Avs' ECHL affiliate:

Still could be signed by any team to an NHL deal but generally teams don't seem to poach players that are already under contract with another team's affiliate.
