Cap for Edm(what do U do?)

Recommended Posts

I'm no Oiler-fan(suspect most here feel the same). But all know they've got an interesting cap-conundrum on the way. This yr, they're fine..it's 2018 they must be focused on.

Next yr, they're already at about 61 mill, for only 13 signed.

Just as an exercise in donning the GM's hat, how would you deal with such a situation?

I think they will try to trade Andrej Sekera and his $5.5M contract 1st and move Nurse up to replace him. They will likely have to retain salary but I believe he will be their 1st priority. They won't re-sign Mark Fayne and that will save them another $3.6M. They will listen to offers for RNH but I don't expect them to actively look to move him.

They have a number of RFA's and UFA's next year and I suspect they will not re-sign some of them. They will likely go with a few younger players on ELC's such as Puljujarvi, Yamamoto and maybe Tyler Benson. The rest of the roster will be players that either re-sign for $2M or under or players that they acquire in the $1M range.

Their depth may not be too good but I think they will still have a pretty formidable team if they stay relatively healthy.

This season, Edmonton has a $825k Carryover Bonus Overage, and is liable for up to $7.525M in Potential Performance Bonuses.

While not all will be reached; barring injury McDavid is a lock to make $2.85M alone.

They will also be paying Korpikoski $1M this season, and Pouliot $1.333333M for each of the next 4 seasons to not play for them.

I expect that Fayne will not be re-signed after this season, as I highly doubt that they will be able to trade him.

My guess is that RNH will be traded no later than the 2018 Entry Draft for draft picks only.

That would save the Oilers $9.625M.

7 RFAs (Strome, Slepyshev, Caggiula, Pakarinen, Benning, Nurse, & Brossoit and 3 out of 4 UFAs ( Letestu, Maroon, & Jokinen) will need new contracts for 2018/2019.

Bold = Eligible for Salary Arbitration.

In 2019/2020, Puljujarvi will be coming off of his ELC, and Talbot will be a UFA.

They could both be looking for big increases.

IMO, they should be fine (Cap-wise) this season, but could be deep in Cap Hell afterwards.

They're the next in line for a potential dynasty team IMO, after the Hawks and the current Pens.

With that said, they should look to emulate the current Pens, and it looks like they're well on their way to doing so (two star centers, backbone goalie, several skilled, mobile defenders, skilled wingers).  As the cap goes up the core just mentioned likely stays while the most expendable position (wingers) goes through a revolving door.  Hall and Ebbs are already gone, and Pool Party likely becomes the next star scorer along one of these centers.  Aside from that, they'll probably shuffle out the excess (as mentioned, Sekera and pricey, older wingers like Lucic for complementary wingers who can either skate or play abrasively), and with smart cap management (heaven forbid that take place) they could remain dominant and cap compliant.  Watch out league.

I'm wondering with McD so damned gifted, should they try to make him a point man sniper on the PP? Perhaps they could turn him into a Karlsson-lite? Have they tried him or Drai back there yet?

Then keep restocking with 3~4 million $ defensive D-specialists. Keep that part of the team reasonably-priced.

Lucic - Drai - Pulijarvi

Klefbom - McD

Before declaring them a dynasty how about they get good enough to win a cup first? How many Memorial Cups did McDavid win? They need to draft a solid defence and goaltender. They need to trade RNH for a stud d-man, and draft a goalie who can be strong enough to win 16 games in the Playoffs.

McDavid may be the best player in the NHL, but the team needs to learn to play as a unit, and get better defensively, and in net.

Their goaltending is just fine.

Trade McDavid to Canucks for rights to Tryamkin, Benning's hair gel and any Messier crap still hanging around the offices/storerooms.    That would clear up a lot of cap space for Edmonton and solve that crunch.

Before they let it go to Minnesota it was terrible. As far as Talbot goes he played very well last season.

He played way over his head IMHO and will come back to earth.   His fundamentals are odd and I think teams can figure out a few tendencies that he seems to have.   Not a great blocker side coverage as one.

He got better as the season went on iirc.
