After our last 3 trades (and perhaps, one smaller one pending), I think we're darn near tapped for draft-deals but if anyone has any other deals they'd like to explore, we're a quick type away.

We've got tonnes of cap space if anyone is looking to clear some for July 1st as well.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The League is requiring that ALL teams submit their Front Office Budgets for the season between now and June 30th at 9pm Pacific time.  Teams must submit their budget even if there is no change to their current spending pattern.  This requirement is a formality to assist the League in reconciling the ELC slide feature with the new Salary Structure page and consolidating that information in a format that is easier to track and follow from team to team if an eligible player is traded.

BIG DEAL IN BIG D!

On Sunday night, less than a week before the CDCGML Draft, the newly minted General Manger of the Dallas Stars pulled off his first trade as a member of the organization and it was one that will set the direction for the team for the coming years. While it may be one deal that is immediately unpopular with fans, GM theminister claims it was one that was necessary for the team to move forward into being an annual contender.

"Moving Jack was never part of our plan when we signed on but sometimes a GM needs to look at the reality of their situation and act accordingly. There's no getting around it, moving a potential star centre who is only touching the surface will never have immediate results on the ice. However, needing a new contract extension, one which would make him one of the more highly paid players in the league, was not a direction that was going to help us turn this around while he was still in his prime. There were just too many holes in our talent base, and still are, for us to surround Jack with a winner in the next few years. His cap allocation, combined with existing contracts, was going to make it difficult for us to have the flexibility to address all of our organizational issues."

The GM was pretty clear that the work was only getting started. "We are in flux, that's for sure. We need to be, if we are going to right this ship. No one should feel confident with their jobs when we've produced so little for so long. Our fans deserve better... they deserve to contend annually. I'm not promising it will happen this year but we will get there sooner than many may expect." It's a tall order, but one the manager knew when accepting his role. "We built an annual powerhouse in the Eastern Conference. It's not easy, there are so many smart GMs in this league. It's competitive. To get where we want to be we need to be younger, leaner, deeper. We need to draft well and spend our money better. All smaller markets need to."

When Eichel was drafted just three short years ago, the future of the franchise seemed to rest on his shoulders. That's all changed now. It was going to need to be a Herculean effort on his part to propel this team to a championship without the support around him. You could tell his frustration boiled over at times last season and the long term marriage was not to be.  Whether theminister, and this deal specifically, can move them toward a Cup remains to be seen. The GM certainly thinks so.

"Look... Eichel may become an annual 90 point player in this league... he may win some awards...I'm sure that was expected when he was drafted that high. But we got back some very talented players. Elias Lindholm has another level, we think, and isn't much older than Jack. Tufte, Kunin, Stephens and Shaw provide us really good quality forward depth to build upon. Last year Johns showed he is a top 4 minute eating defenseman. We added a top 60 pick in this draft to go with our full slate of selections. Yakupov is a young player that we took a flyer on... we don't know what his future holds. We hope he comes back and is committed to improving. There may still be some upside there."

Regardless of whether he has lost some faith amongst fans after this trade, very natural when you deal the face of the franchise, the GM insisted he is pressing forward. "Expect more changes. We aren't done. We can't be. Complacency is death in this world. We aren't always going to make the popular moves but we are committed to improving." Asked how long that may take to materialize after dealing a 21 year old cornerstone piece, he only had this to say," Am I telling you it will be a quick turnaround? No. But I'm also not saying it won't be. Teams are built on groups of players, not individuals. Don't write our obituary today or you might regret it tomorrow."

The Habs completed two minor trades last night, bringing in three later 2018 picks and a 2019 late pick. Without a 1st in this years draft, and the 50th pick being bandied about as a potential bargaining chip, we still wanted to stock our system and give our scouts a chance to unearth some gems in the later rounds while the big team goes for it in the East next year.
