Toronto Maple Leafs winger Joffrey Lupul failed his follow-up physical and is now eligible to be placed on long-term injured reserve, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told Sportsnet's Darren Millard.

The veteran forward spent the entire 2016-17 season on LTIR, but stirred up questions when he called the Leafs cheaters for how they used the designation, hinting at the fact that he was indeed healthy enough to play.

Now that Lupul has undergone an independent evaluation of his status and been deemed unfit to play, the Leafs have the option of placing him on LTIR, which would result in his $5.25-million salary for the 2017-18 season not counting against Toronto's salary cap.

Lupul has not suited up in an NHL contest since the 2015-16 campaign.

Clearly he got paid off to fail his second physical.

Money talks.

Love how the Laughs ownership flexes their wallets to help the team. I wish Aquaman did some more bribing... send a Rolls Royce to the chief of the Old Boys Club!

Edit: not to say Aquaman hasn't been generous enough with this team. We have world class facilities and infrastructure.

Somehow I doubt this "independent evaluator" is truly "independent". Something just seems off about this whole story.

Lupul agent explained to him how much money he would lose if he passed the physical. Its crap, everyone knows it, but what can you do? The NHL isn't a regular business, its a club with its own internal rules.

BS, in this case it should still count against the cap, or at least half..  It's not an injury keeping him from playing it's just sheer laziness or corruption.  Either way the leafs signed him to a deal and it should count against the cap.  Don't overpay players to long term deals if you think you'll run into cap troubles down the road.  But hey, ding us with that Luongo deal and while your at it Gary make sure you compound that interest as well:ph34r:.  Effing joke.

Time to go buy shares in aluminium foil.

It did seem pretty fishy when the leafs own doctor said he was unfit to play, while Lupul was adamant that he was.  But now there's been an independent evaluation that confirms what the leafs originally claimed.  Not everything has to be a conspiracy folks.  Do you really think the other 30ish team owners wouldn't be up in arms if the league just allowed the leafs to do this?  How about the NHLPA?  There are a lot of interested stakeholders here.

GMs and owners know not to air their dirty laundry in public.  The boys club resolves things behind closed doors.  Everyone knows this and Lupul was just slow to pick up on that fact.

Okay, then how about the NHLPA who's mandate it is to serve the interests of its members? They're just gonna lay down because of the "club"?  As we've seen in the past, the two sides (NHL vs. NHLPA) aren't afraid to go head to head.  Perhaps maybe Lupul doesn't understand what it means to clear a medical exam for the NHL?  It certainly seems like there is more to this story.

They'll investigate and if they find something, lobby in Lupul's defense.  But that doesn't happen overnight nor in public.

Part of Lupul's salary is also covered by insurance. So really what people are saying is that two doctors would risk their medical licenses to commit insurance fraud so that the Leafs could gain some cap relief that they don't even need. According to capfriendly they are compliant without placing Lupul on LTIR.

Come on now, we already know that for years doctors pepped players up on any drugs they'd 'need' to get themselves onto the ice every day. I'm not saying there's definitely something shady going on here, but it isn't as far fetched as you'd have people believe.
