[Trade] Canucks trade Andrey Pedan, 4th-round pick to Penguins for Derrick Pouliot

To be fair, they're still both quite young. Young D do tend to struggle with consistency (especially when they're not highly drafted phenoms) and both have/are dealing with, common 'sophomore slumps'.

Development rarely takes a nice linear path. And neither was particularly expected to be a top pair D. Either developing in to steady, bottom 4 D is still found money.

For sure. When you think about it, this is the 3rd season in a row that we've had a defenseman come out of nowhere to earn a prominent role on our team. That's pretty impressive considering the total cost of those 3 players were a 4th rounder, a 5th rounder and Pedan. Even if only one of them turn out to be a legit top 4 dman, that's money well spent.

So Pouliot couldn’t play for the Pens, but only Pedan is a bum for not being able to play as well?

I don't really see what you're saying by calling Pedan a "bum" to be honest. Some trades are won and lost and trades like these shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out no matter what one's opinion of JB may be. Pouliot's really shown to be better than Pedan and that makes sense given that Pouliot's a former first round pick.

Pedan could have made it and who knows if he would have if WD didn't throw him in the forwards lineup; however, he also might have not and there's no evidence that can be obtained from something that never happened.

Kind of feel for the guy. Never got a real good look in the bigs. 20 years ago and his game probably translates better to the NHL. Good luck in the KHL. P.S. tell Tryamkin to get his butt back here if you see him.

Amongst dmen he finished 1st in goals, 2nd in points, and was +19 in 52 games played. Not bad for a big tough player. Had a lot of potential.

Seemed are really good team mate too.  Just didn’t process the game quickly enough for the speed of the small ice game.  He will do way better in the slower big ice game.

Not really, both teams swapped 2 non nhl players. If anything Pittsburgh won because they got a pick.

Pouliot is definitely an NHL player.
