Austrian Election

It looks like Austria has taken a sharp right turn just like Germany.

FPÖ not only had 2nd best results in the election, but most likely they will be part of the ruling coalition.

Glad to see people finally seeing that socialism isn’t the best answer. Too bad it sounds like these far right clowns are as ridiculous as the alt-right movement in the USA

I think people in Norway with their free health care, education and retirement (1 trillion in their pension plan) might say different.

It cost corporations the ability to produce oil and only the state is allowed to

Plus high taxes.  And free healthcare, 6 weeks paid vacation a year, free education, subsidized to free transit one of the best education and health systems in the world and a perrennial top 5 in the quality of life index

That crap aint free man!

Like I said it aint free. And not all education is free there. If it was so great you would think they would have more then 5 million people. But let's not derail this thread I'm fully aware you're in love with socialism.

Yeah, they used oil profits for much of it instead of schilling out to foreign corps and used said wealth to benefit their citizens.  Then they invested fairly well. The recent BS growth of the stock markets due to the influx of money from central banks makes that retirement fund look nicer than it is...but a trillion with a 8% contribution from the highest tax bracket..that is something else.  Their taxation rates are lower than ours in someways and higher on sales tax for food & drink at restaurants.  High sales tax is a fairer tax really. The more you consume and buy..the more you pay.

I don't like taxes at all. I like you boss but you will never, ever sell me on socialism.

The Norwegians have oil. They don't have to be any smarter than Middle Eastern oil sheikdoms in order to prosper. Canadians don't have oil. We do have the genius to grow a job juggernaut of an industry out of nothing, an industry that can compete with the foreign fat asses. Unfortunately, Canadians are also burdened with zombie armed pipeline protesters intent on securing energy markets for those same entitled foreigners.

I agree....sales tax is the way to go.

Wow...that Austrian right wing guy is only 31 years old.

Especially the failures in life, everyone else during their working life had no free floating income of their own due to some of the highest taxes on the planet.  A society that completely relies on the government to subsidize their entire life including retirement, doesn’t sound like fun to me.  I’d rather depend on myself than on someone else allowing me to survive.  Government subsidized theft is still theft after all.

All that stuff is great, no argument here.

I just would like to see a country with large population with all that.

Oh no doubt...easier with 5 million that 350 million.....but I think it could be done with 35-50 if enough resources are available.

Except they don't have as high as taxes as you're making it out.  What theft?  Do you mean taxes in general?

We have some of the largest oil reserves in the world and frankly should have built refineries long ago and shipped the finished product. Instead we ship heavy crude where refineries aren't set up for it in some cases, lose out on jobs and have foreign companies take much of the profit. Nice try though.

Frankly I am more libertarian on most issues....I'd be more conservative leaning but for some reason they're also religious and I have zero use for that.  If you believe the world is 5000 years old you should be barred from politics because you're a &^@#ing moron and your beliefs are detrimental to those capable of rational thinking*

Only items I am full left on are drugs, health care and using our resources more for the people and not corporations.

I was just pointing out that there are examples of social ideals working out just fine.  We're small enough and resource rich enough for it to work better here than it has.

*I don't mean you personally...just a generality.

Right. It's called allocation of tax dollars. Government is the king of waste, we see it all the time here. Americans have more than half their taxes go to the war machine. People say there is no money for education, healthcare? &^@# off. There's more than enough but corporate fat cats and the military complex own Washington. Most of the idiots lambasting this appropriate reallocation of tax dollars would actually benefit from it but are too stubborn or ignorant to ever acknowledge it.
