[Waivers] Antti Niemi (claimed by Canadiens)

Recommended Posts

Despite the last 2 seasons, Niemi's not a bad backup at all. It's quite sad how far his career has fallen off the last few seasons though.

I think if he doesn't get picked up then he's done with the NHL.

I believe the Penguins get the first choice to claim him then have the option to assign him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins without any other team trying to grab him.

They don't get first claim - but if they are the ONLY team to place a claim, they can assign him directly to the AHL. But if another team does place a claim, regardless of priority, the Penguins would have to keep him on their NHL roster

Why can they send him driectly to the AHL?

I doubt the Penguins claim him so they can assign him to Wilkes-barre.

If they're that concerned about finding a suitable backup, I wouldn't be shocked if the Penguins make a phone call to either Anaheim or Winnipeg to acquire one of Reto Berra (Ducks) or Michael Hutchinson (Jets). A B prospect or a mid round pick is likely all that's required to pick up either of those goalies. Hutchinson is probably the better fit, honestly.

If anything, Niemi could be claimed by the Golden Knights if they're *that* concerned about their goaltending situation but they're in a win/win situation (if they win, great story, but if they lose they get a better shot at a franchise player) so there's not a ton of incentive for them to claim Niemi... also one of VGK's 3 goalies has to be coming back soon, ya?

Prediction: Niemi clears.

If the claiming team places the player on waivers in the same season and his original team claims him, the team may send the player to the AHL without placing him on waivers again, unless as mentioned by Squeak.

Sole reason why the Leafs wouldn't waive Corrado.

22 games, .910 sv%, 2.63 gaa. Aren't these the numbers that have all of you thinking Ryan Miller was so special? Please.

Again inflated by a team that limited scoring chances, he faced shots but they were easy to stop, and shockingly as the teams he played for got worse Niemi's numbers were god awful and now he's been waived more than once. Please.

Fair enough.

Still after tens and thousands of years and all of humanity has vanished from the earth when explorers from other planets scavenge through the ruins of the NHL Headquarters they will see the name "Antti Niemi" engraved in this giant of Trophy thus passing on the legend of Antti Niemi for millions of years.
