Dowd=Megma=Vey

Not sure what the OP is trying to get at. Dowd was had for a failed 4th round pick in Subban, Vey cost a second (Garrison) and Megna was an FA.

Also Dowd plays a credible position as a 4th line center and face off specialist, he isn’t an undersized kinda center/kinda winger/tweener middle six player like Vey, or a AHLer ‘right handed shot’ gifted 40 games or so on the top line and scored 2 goals I think.

Dowd is useful, Vey and Megna were not.

It's interesting to see McCann's name resurface, so I took a quick stroll through some Panthers' sites looking for references to McCann and Gudbranson.

Some believe that the Panthers haven't replaced the toughness and leadership which Gudbranson brought to their team, and that the Panthers didn't get enough of a return for Gudbranson.

Some believe that the Panthers got a steal of a deal getting McCann. Others expressed (mock) surprise that McCann was still on their team, while still others pointed out that he has been a scratch for the last couple of games, replaced by guys like Vrbata and McGinn (didn't notice if McCann has an injury issue).

There is also talk about the Panthers re-acquiring Gudbranson. Some do not want him back (which seems to be a minority, but I could be wrong), while most of the debate seems to revolve around just how little they would have to pay up to get Gudbranson back... and then these threads mostly dissolved into ridiculous trade suggestions involving various Panther underachievers and low picks for Tanev.

That’s awesome.  The end part sounds just like CDC. ::D

Why are so many people down on Dowd?  With the obliteration of our center position through injuries he was brought here as a stop gap and is put on the ice for one main reason - faceoffs.  On most nights he can hold is own on d zone draws. On most nights he looks like the only guy that can push back if the game gets physical.  This move is meant to hold down the fort until Horvat/Sutter come back.  The fact that he was traded for a D that is not very good at playing D in the AHL is a bonus.

I think most that understand the game and the key role of a good face-off man are not down on him at all.  He had good success offensively in college and has some skill but it is his face-off prowess that Canucks have been able to utilize while missing their top two centers in terms of draws (how many teams in NHL could survive without their top two face-off men for this long?).   Subban was regressing unfortunately and Dowd has shown flashes of being a solid bottom six guy with some upside skill too boot.   Guy can skate, has some edge and can be dominate in the circle.    Every team needs role players - he is a legitimate NHL talent for the role he is currently playing.   I think you will find more are happy with his play than the opposite - just those who are not happy are more vocal.

Let the team tank where it will.    Don't bother trading prospects for  27 yr old  4th liners.....

Dowd turns 28 yrs old this May and looks to be  AHL  / NHL fringe player.  7 rd draft choice.

Why would the canucks trade 22 yr old former 4th rounder offensive D man for a guy that clearly has no future on our club. ?

Why trade a prospect for a guy to suck up minutes and keep the club at 27th overall...    ?

Uh, because the 22 year old was never going to be anything more in their mind and was taking up a contract and they didn't want to keep their NHL team without someone who could win faceoffs?    If you think every move has to be related to a talent that will be part of a Cup run at some point, you might as well stop watching for a few more seasons as this is how it is done - minor moves will be required to maintain an NHL roster (particularly if injuries keep happening) while the major top 6 and top 4 talents, respectively, get put into place.

Said former 4th round pick has turned out to be a virtually worthless asset. At least we salvaged something from him. No one doubts (very much) that Dowd has limitations, and will likely never progress out of a bottom 6 role, at best. But teams, all teams, are made up of not only skilled players but also meat-and-potatoes type guys. Dowd has given us center depth at a time where we had basically none, has given a faceoff presence that has helped not only at even strength but also on PK, and has provided a little grit. The only grit Subban would have provided was to be a speed bump for guys like Lucic.

And the original post: Vey was an offensive center that wasn't able to provide offense or two way play; we then improved to Megna who at least had some speed and forecheck abilities; we now have a bona-fide 4th line center that has some viable NHL skills. So, really...Dowd>Megna>Vey

Rather would have seen Granny play Centre and kept Subban on the farm till we know for sure what Subbans  ceiling will be.....   22 yr old is still too young for a D man to be given up on...  especially for a  27 yr old guy that is probably out of the league in the next year .....

Bona fide 4th line centre...   maybe on the 27th overall team  he is the  6 th or  7th C  .....   don't think the LA kings  would say that Dowd was a 4th line centre man though either....

PS -  Megma was an improvement.... you must be kidding.....

Smart Kings GM once again taking advantage of Canuck management...

Dowd will play more games this season alone than Subban will his whole career book it.

1 pt in 13 games for Dowd is really nothing that great is it ?

29 games played this year he has 1 goal and 1 assist....

I realize he was brought in to fill a gap till injured guys come back..

Just commenting on the history of our club bringing in centres that really haven't worked out.

TBH i am more disappointed with  Granny and Gaunce .  I was expecting both of them to increase their contributions with increased opportunities they have been given this year....

I agree with your take on things, I thought Burmistrov could have played a 3rd or 4th line role with better offensive upside. Burmistrov went into the corners and won puck battles. He is also an ex top 10 pick, which normally means they are a serviceable NHLer.

I think Dowd works hard and looks like he is performing by flying all over the ice but rarely accomplishes a great deal. My problem is he takes bad penalties because he is running around a lot. His face off ability improved in the last game, but it needs to be more consistent. I was hoping he would bring more grit as we are really missing Dorsett's presence, but if he can start delivering on defensive zone face offs there may be a place for him.

More so, I am am disapointed by Gaunce, he is often invisible. Both Gaunce and Dowd are being given too much ice time during key moments of a game (3rd period).  Green favours Gaunce more than he should IMO. My hope is once Sutter and Horvat return Gaunce/Dowd get cutback to 7-8 mins in ice time. Currently they are getting too much ice time, with little offensive upside and are not delivering grit/aggression.  The only casualty of that move would be Virtanen, I hope he gets moved to the 3rd line when the team gets healthy again.

Worthless?

I don't expect Jordan Subban to bust into the NHL anytime soon.  But a very serviceable AHL PP specialist. Believe, without checking, one or two time AHL all star?

But this same tanking / performing debate goes on in the AHL as well.  Vancouver sends a hot prospect, say Cassels ( ), and the main clubs fans complain because the prospect does not get any playing time while an AHL lifer plays all the key minutes.  A riot ensues on said NHL teams boards; ''what the hell do we have a development team for!!!"

The reality is prospects need to arrive in a professional environment where there are already seasoned pro's. Who know how to practice, train, win key face - off's, D who can angle forwards off, know when to spark the team, etc.. Otherwise the said prospects might as well keep playing shinny with their 17 & 18 year junior mates. They wont improve, learn? And the AHL teams paying fans deserve as good a show as possible. The prospects a target they have yo outperform, learn from in order to continue their own development.

My point is, having had Subban as an AHL all star, a guy who put up points on our minor team actually served a good purpose. By all reports he played crappy D in his own end. But trained like a demon, was well liked among his peers and fans. Sold tickets. Many would even deem Subban to have been a better than average return for a 4th round pick (he is really?)! Then at the end of the day, as you mentioned, we received a short term useable part for our NHL team in trade.

There is also a good will, good dealings with players.  And management of our AHL roster.

FTM we have McEneny & Holm who can provide the offense from the back end that was being provided by Subban. Juolevi to arrive next year. It is very possible / likely that we simply now have prospects that are passing Subban on the depth chart?

And as such, whatever the Monarch's are now called in California, LA's minor team probably needs a serviceable AHL pro? Jordan a new lease on life? Subban himself probably believed he needs a fresh start, a last chance with a new organization.  I suspect his agents and Benning had discussions?

So it would additionally have been good faith on Bennings part to give Jordan, who worked hard in our system that shot!

i cant support the deal.

I do agree that subban is happy to get a new start away from canucks organization though

Temporary player may not be temporary, and without his face off ability this team would be losing more games by worse scores. Losing more games can be ok for draftists, losing games by worse scores can crush players confidence however.

More games our clubs loses  this year the better.   I believe in this team... we can get to  28th and maybe even 29th if we sell properly at the TDL
