Who Should The Canucks Draft Second Overall

Hypothetically if the miraculous happens, the Canucks somehow get sort of lucky in the draft lottery and get the second overall pick, who do you think the Canucks should draft?

Rasmus Dahlin will almost definitely go 1st overall, but the rest of the top ten could really go in almost any order.

In my opinion, the ten best players available would be:

1. Rasmus Dahlin

2. Andrei Svechnikov

3. Filip Zadina

4. Adam Boqvist

5. Quinn Hughes

6. Matthew Tkachuk

7. Ty Smith

8. Isac Lundestrom

9. Ryan Merkley

10. Evan Bouchard

Svechnikov and Zadina are probably the next two best players available after Dahlin, and Tkachuk is also expected to go very near the top of the draft, they are all wingers however, a position where the Canucks are looking pretty good for the future. Boeser, Baertschi, Virtanen, Goldobin, Dahlen, Lind, Gadjovich and Lockwood is enough for an entire NHL lineup and they also have guys like Palmu, MacEwen, Carcone, D'Aoust, Jasek and Molino having NHL potential as well. Looking at that I would say that on the wings, the Canucks have the players needed to be a Stanley Cup contender for many years.

The Canucks also have pretty good depth at center with Horvat, Pettersson and Gaudette and in goal with Demko and DiPietro, there aren't really any top centers or goalies at the top of this years draft however, so this doesn't really matter for the sake of this discussion.

The one position left is defense. The Canucks have three decent young d-men currently in the NHL in Stecher, Hutton and Pouliot, all of them have the potential to be good second pairing d-men, but not more than that. Then the Canucks have Olli Juolevi who looks like he could be a solid #2 or #3 d-man if he fulfills his potential. The Canucks also have a number of good defensive prospects in Holm, McEneny, Brisebois, Chatfield, Candella, Brassard and Rathbone, but they all look like they will be second pairing d-men at best. That leaves that Canucks with a big whole on defense, a legitimate #1 defenseman who can also quarterback the power play.

The good news is even if the Canucks don't get lucky and get to select Rasmus Dahlin, there are a lot of very talented d-men at the top end of this years draft. Boqvist, Hughes, Smith, Merkley and Bouchard would be the top group, while Wilde, Woo, Dobson, Miller, McIsaac and Samuelsson should all also go in the first round.

Of those players Boqvist and Hughes are the only two that I would really consider picking 2nd overall over Svechnikov, Zadina and Tkachuk. I think that the best more for the Canucks to make if they have the 2nd overall pick would be to take one of those two. Personally I prefer Hughes slightly after seeing how dominant he looked at the world juniors. They could also consider trading down, but I don't think that would be the best way to go as most of the teams that look like they will be drafting near the top of this years draft need d-men.

i think they should trade down from the number 2 spot

and acquire more than 1 draft pick in exchange

or a high end d prospect and a reduced draft pick

and pick a top dman from this draft with the reduced draft pick(s)

rather then take an offense player and try to flip that player or another high end prospect for a dman later

dmen are required on this team now

I'd try and trade down within the top 5 tbh and garner additional assets. Ideally picks. I'd love to somehow wind up with more than one first round pick. I'd personally go heavy on centers and D this draft while trying to balance that with BPA.

"Who Should The Canucks Draft Second Fifth Overall"

FTFY.

In all seriousness, if we don't get Dahlin and we get 2nd, we should trade down for the next best defenseman available, we don't really need to stock up on bonafide forwards too much.

Always take the BPA - Svechnikov will be a game breaker. It gives you freedom to package other players to either find another pick of get a dman.

We will get Tryamkin back in 2 years, we have Tanev, Juolevi, Stecher, whatever we get for Gud (or Gud) and some good prospect in the AHL

Taking the BPA always gives you the most flexibility as it ups the overall talent level of your team.

Boqvist has drawn comparisons to Karlsson which intrigues me. He would be a great consolation prize to not getting #1 but Zadina intrigues me, he may be another elite scorer.

I would stay away from Tkachuk, if he's anything like his brother I'd say that these guys are a sideshow. I know that the Canucks need grit but look for it elsewhere.

The top 5 of dahlin, zadina, tkachuk, Svechnikov and boqvist is pretty stellar

any of them would have been 1st overall in last years draft

People have been raving about tkachuk like crazy and boqvist is a right handed puck mover something we don’t have

i wouldn’t go with the Russian unless we’re at no.5 though

in theory you are likely correct

but on this particular team

i think it better to convert this value now

fans here have great difficulty accepting trades of players who have become a canuck

even if they never ever pulled on a jersey -  forsling

fringe players who are traded or let go are cried over for ever ... corrodo is but one example

i don't agree the team depth is anything close to satisfactory

the pipeline is almost empty.. perhaps some longer shot prospect will make it

but we believed stech and hutton were those guys... are they ? really?

and dreaming that try will be back is a bit silly as well . cannot plan a team based on factors completely out of the team's control

the team requires dmen

i say let's get them now

and not fall into the edmonton dilemna

where their needs are so apparent and desperate that they seem forced to overpay

You don't build a team based on CDC whining good sir! And I don't think people would complain with a 6'3 212 RW with immense talent, game changing speed and hands and a compete level that would make him one of the leader on the team

best player available give you more depth meaning you can trade some away and recoup value. its the best asset management strategy

Moreover at that level (#2) there is much less risk of a bust with a player like Svechnikov- he's THAT good.

Implicit in the 'trade down and get a dman strategy' is an assumption that the player at 5-7 has the same risk of not making it or reaching his ceiling. I beg to differ, If you have seen this kid play, as I have live probably 10 games (live in Toronto) and on TV maybe 15 times you'd know he's a no brainer pick and had it not been a 1d ahead of him, he'd be #1 overall if a forward was his competition.

I agree with most posters here so far. Trade down to 4th...take Boqvist. I'm confident he will be something special and will QB our PP for years to come. The advantage is that he is as late a birthday as you can get...an August baby so you basically get a full year of extra development out of him to show what he can do. He is currently listed as 5'11 but with that extra year, he should theoretically be able to gain another inch or two which would be a good height for the new NHL. His brother is currently listed as 6'0 so I have no worries he will at least reach that height. His playing weight will also most likely be in the 190-200 range. What I also really like about him is that he can score....more so than most of the draft comparables so he doesn't always have to rely on using his teammates to generate chances.

Worst case and you trade down and 3rd overall selects him, you will still get a Svechnikov/Zadina/Tkachuk to select from.
