ARLINGTON, Va. - The Washington Capitals have re-signed center Lars Eller to a five-year, $17.5 million contract extension, with an average annual value of $3.5 million, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today.

Eller, 28, has registered 28 points (11g, 17a) in 53 games this season, which ranks sixth on the Capitals. The 6'2", 207-pound center is three points shy of setting a new single-season high, set in the 2012-13 season with the Montreal Canadiens. Eller set a career high four-game goal streak (1/7-1/12) and scored five goals in six games (1-7-1/19) during the stretch. In addition, Eller ranks fourth on the team this season with 99 shots and his 102:33 time on the penalty kill ranks second among Capitals forwards this season.

The Capitals acquired Eller from Montreal on June 24, 2016, in exchange for the Capitals' second round NHL draft picks in 2017 and 2018. The Rodovre, Denmark, native has earned 53 points (23g, 30a) in 133 games with Washington. The Capitals are 32-8-3 all-time when Eller records a point.

Drafted by St. Louis in the first round, 13th-overall, in the 2007 draft, Eller has recorded 209 points (96g, 113a) in 576 games with St. Louis, Montreal and Washington. Eller has recorded at least 25 points in each of his last five seasons.

Hopefully they run out of cap room and Carlson hits the market! Or have to trade RFA Wilson to the Canucks ;)

Carlson would make our D look a whole lot better by pushing everyone else down to more manageable minutes and opposition.

The only question is do you want to spend all your money now or save it for the following year where Karlsson, Doughty and OEL are free agents.

Provided we can even get one of those players. Personally, I don't think it's wise basing your decisions on possible free agents that may or may not be free agents, let alone be free agents that sign with your team. That sounds more like a recipe for disaster if you ask me.

And that can even be applied to free agents at the end of this season. Yet, we're not even talking about at the end of this season with this. This is a year and a half down the road. lol

Canucks have a lot of money coming off the books and a lot of good young players coming up on entry level contracts. Canucks are gonna have the money to be major players in the ufa market this year or next. It definitely is a recipe for disaster case in point Eriksson. You’ll overpay for anybody you get on the market.

They're also going to have players like Boeser to sign, and the last thing we want is a free agency contract that hampers those deals down the road.

I would take Carlson at $7.5 over those guys at $10+

Really though the main point is that we need to start supplementing the roster through the best free agents you can find.

You can’t rebuild forever, otherwise you just end up paying or overpaying guys as they come off their ELCs each year and never getting ahead.

We now have a good situation where we can legitimately say we will have 1-2 rookies per year coming into the lineup on cheap ELCs for the next 5 years (after this draft).

They may not all be top end players, but filling out the middle and bottom end of the roster at a low price, leaving cap space for some high priced help.
