[GDT] 2018 Olympic Hockey Games

German Coach and players showed their inexperience and nerves... had the game, just needed to rag the puck for a few minutes... duh!

Russians buckled down in the overtime and just got the job done.

Would have been nice to see Germany win, but Datsyuk well deserved a gold medal too.

Guess Minnesota is going to start looking at calling up Kirill Kaprizov REAL soon.

And would you believe Nikita Gusev's rights are owned by Tampa...? as if they don't already have enough allstar forwards.

The only profession team won gold?! Who would've thought.

I suppose, but many teams had KHL players.

No

I'm fairly sure every player on every single team plays in a professional league, except the few college guys on Team USA

But yeah, Russia was expected to win

I usually don't watch much of any Olympics. Hockey and curling, yes. Don't have much good to say about most Euro hockey. IMHO they have lowered the game with their diving, spearing and slashing. They are pretty good at hiding this stuff.

I thought Don Cherry was bang on, on Coach's Corner. Canada facing off against the Germans and both centers are tossed with a penalty. German PP that scores and Canada is out of the Gold medal game. Surprise it was a Russian linesman who tossed both Canadian centers and ensured his country would not face a Canadian team for Gold.

What could have been added to this? Canadian dance pair win Gold beating out a French pair who take silver. The French lodge some kind of protest. Who was the French official? Yup the same kind who took a bribe from the Russians many years ago to ensure a Canadian couple did not get gold. He was caught and banned for 10 years but is now back heading up French skating. Bettman was absolutely right to challenge IIOC who are a band of thieves and their superiors on the Olympic Committee are no better.

You're joking right? Top five?? I'm sure he wasn't!

He took a 24th place team with 83 points (coached by Torts) to a 10th place team with 101 points in one year. That's a heck of a jump.

The voting results are here. Desjardins finished in 9th place (with one first place vote): https://www.nhl.com/news/flames-coach-hartley-wins-jack-adams-award/c-772004

  • 2 weeks later...

What a completely dominant game for Canada.    Italy will be a tougher opponent for game 2 but nice to see a start like this - 17-0 is not really a competitive score but given the coach took foot off gas and didn't play first unit PP after first period and really played younger guys for most 2nd half of the game it speaks to how ready this team was to show they are going to try and bring gold home this time!
