Maybe you shouldn't bother. I mentioned that I was tired of Henrik's "leadership" as of late claiming playing a certain way is unacceptable then the next game goes out and does the same thing but worse. Taking penalties at the worst times all season, awful back-checks, horrible cycling.

Dude, I GET HIS LEGACY.

I AM TALKING ABOUT THE NOW.

We are where we are because this damn team is stuck in the past.

WE. NEED. A . NEW. IDENTITY...

what u say is a load of crap. u don't think they know this team is rebuilding? this team is here because we aren't stuck in the past. getting mad and saying they shouldn't smile when scoring is pure bs. youre type will get mad if we win or lose. u honestly have to realize the transition and everything that comes with it. choose a side and stick with it. I think u think what u say will get u praise and for sure it will by uneducated bandwagoners. good for u. u win some fans. the fact is is that we are in full rebuild and just because management hasn't said it outright doesn't mean its not in place. I find it seriuously funny how some idiot fans out there wont believe its a rebuild until its said by management. if u have any hockey IQ you would realize this has been happening for a few years. for the love of idiots on these forums I hope management does say it so u and others can say ok now we can build towards the future and feel right. tell me something....what will it take for u to see the rebuild that is happening and has been for the past few years? don't be dumb. use your eyes and knowledge to know it. brian burke once said now that he is gm he will straight up lie to the media now that he is in power to deter media...which also lie. ur opinion is simply one that is frustrated with the transition of a rebuild. u feel ur voice must be heard and critical of it. ur not willing to go through tough times for the rebuild. ur not a very strong fan. ive been through many changes with this canucks team. it wont be the last. my advice is stick by your team and don't kick them when down. its natural. this team although looking bleak now, has many bright days ahead because of the moves this management has made in the past few years. youre NEW IDENTITY is coming but it takes travelling through rough times to get there.

I was thinking along similar lines. If the team does well to end the season, maybe the team is not as bad as it seems and maybe we should therefore be happy on that account. But I could not convince myself, especially if the guys scoring are the Sedins as they are too old to be around for the next "window of opportunity" (if there is one).

Even guys like MDZ and Gagner and various others are just placeholders. So, whether they are poor placeholders or pretty good placeholders does not really matter.

If Virtanen or Leipsic or Pouliot started to light things up, that would be a different story and would be fine with me.

But, realistically, this team needs another good draft to have much hope of becoming a contender anytime soon. Part of the issue is that I don't think Benning has shown much skill at any aspect of the GM job other than the draft, so we need as good a draft as possible.

Also, the way I read the draft rankings, obviously there is one guy at the top (Dahlin). But there are three more blue-chip guys. So I think getting in the top 4 is very important. And, failing that, we still want to be as high as possible.

Yeah, good point. I suspect the other bottom feeders also have a few key players who won't be on the team by the time they're ready to contend, but it seems like more of an issue for this team since 2 of our top 5 forwards are close to retiring.

I guess the best way to look at who needs the high picks the most is to compare the young talent among the bottom feeders. For this reason I like the idea of building a young team. If the team fails, you get a high pick. If the team succeeds, you can be sure that it's due to players who will still be with you for a long time.

not really. The word "tank" in these talks suggests we lose on purpose. Some teams in the past have obviously done that. To me people who get mad that we win show poor sportsmanship and class. Maybe its just me and a select few who feel that you should never hope your team loses.

Don't bother about it, just think of how stupid they will feel when a team 9th from bottom picks up Dahlin and we get 5th again. - The clue is in the name but they obviously are too dense to know what the word lottery means.

It took a whole season to end up where the Canucks are now. That is the reality! No I do not enjoy seeing the team lose but hoping they go on a winning streak to close out the season is absolutely pointless and even a setback to the future. Putting Benning in the best position on draft day extends beyond the 1st Round.

This is a bad team. All  the young talent coming is no guarantee. I want this org to have the best pool in the NHL. Sit Tanev out play Hutton to close the season and trade him at the draft. Spread the TOI through the roster. There should be no debate about where this team is.

Why though?

This is a Sport, it's meant to be a cacophony of ups and downs and wins and losses. It's meant to be where the impossible happens, where kids see their dreams come true and new heroes emerge every day.

Sport should never be a thing of calculation, it should be about skill, effort and desire and luck earned - where the underdog always has a chance and the greatest headlines are made when the least likely happens.

I have no time for hoping for or rejoicing when we lose because it implies some kind of projected control over outcomes and when that happens, sport is just a fixed fight and any attraction is gone.

Teams with high drafts are not guaranteed success, you have to get the right coach, the right pieces to fit the high drafts and all the time things are changing and your window closes and some other team has had the luck to close you out.

Why do you think Washington hasn't won a SC or the Oilers continue to fail? And yet NJ with one 3rd overall and some supporting pieces were the fairytale winners over the Miighty Ducks. Man I bet a lot of youngsters woke up with stars in their eyes that following morning in New Jersey.

No one can predict the future. We got the 2nd AND 3rd one year and all we managed was 2 standout seasons, one when we got to the SC finals. That was 7 years ago.

All that proves is time waits for nothing and in sport you need to live in the moment and enjoy what you have and better still realise what you have, instead of crapping all over it because you think THERE MIGHT be something better coming  2-3-5-10-20 years down the line. That's a garbage way to support your team imo

I think the question everyone needs to ask themselves about our current roster is this- Can this guy actually help or team win a Stanley Cup? Think about that and go down the list. You may or may not come up with 5ish players. Now then, before next game repeat that question to yourself and have at least a case of beer in the fridge.

Yeah but the whole point is to the increase odds as much as possible. The system is flawed thanks to the oilers.

...and if there wasn't a lottery, then all the more would it be "lose for a better pick" and at least it would have rationality not based on bouncing pingpong balls.

The "flaw" right now is it encourages a certain shallow and myopic subculture to actively cheer against their team.  There's no way getting around these types hoping their team fails than having something like a lottery with equal odds for everyone, which nobody wants.

I used to think it was because the average age here was over-estimated, but then you hear the same thing in the media.  Most-likely it's the usual situation of people simply parroting what they hear, and I still don't want to believe that people are so simple-minded that they actually need momma to spoon-feed them pablum in order to believe it's real, but it's hard to keep making excuses for them.

Oh sure they do -- "lottery = guarantee" <_<

Why else would casinos continue to expand, pushed constantly by government?  Fools and their money are soon parted.  The sad part is it's bred out of impatience and superstition, not clear thinking, hard work, or character.  No thought given to what other consequences there are, just a single focus.

You know what bugs me about Nilsson?  He's 6'6" and he plays short.  Look at the first goal last night and how he leans forward to cover the bottom of the net (I guess that's what he's trying to do).  He's on his hands and knees.  All players have to do is flick it high and bingo, we're down 1-0 in less than a minute.

Is he coached to do that?  Markstrom doesn't do it.  I don't think we can hang this on Cloutier.  No i just think he's stubborn and is going with his "style".  This style is taking him right back to the AHL and back to Sweden honestly.

Think of it more as hoping to lose meaningless games to increase our chances to win the draft lottery, which in turn will (with any luck) help us win meaningful games in the (hopefully) not too distant future.

It's less of a flaw than it once was.

But the league needs to balance helping weaker teams with the propensity to tank once play-offs are out of reach. I think they have hit a reasonable balance given  the diminished incentive to tank. I however would still prefer a top 4 and if the team finishes at the bottom, I like the odds. As I said earlier in the year, it's a win-win season. The team would win by making the play-offs or win by getting a decent pick. I really hope the season doesn't result in being out of the play-offs and out of the top 4. That would be the worst case scenario. As long as the focus is on future development, I won't be disappointed over losses but still happy for wins. But if management focusses more on wining with the vets at the expense of developing the youth, that would look too much like the end of last season. Those useless road victories likely cost the team a top 3 talent and definitely cost the team a top 4. Perhaps splitting hairs but it's about what's best for the team and I think current management is truly doing a good job. I suspect they had call from Bettman because of their tail spin last year. My buddy, a huge Toronto fan, was pissed with the Nucks and frightened about getting bumped out of last place.

Finishing 30th means you have a 63.8% chance of drafting 4th or 5th.

Even finishing dead last you have a 51.9% chance of drafting 4th.

As I've said, I'd rather finish 8th and only have a 16.3% chance of finishing in a worse position.

Our goalie coach will probably ruin him. He reminded me of Roberto there.

I hope that TL and JB realize what has happened to our goaltending this season and decide to make a coaching change.

Odds are still better at winning when finishing last and the draft position is guaranteed better in subsequent rounds.

The bold part of your post I dont understand.

I'd rather have a smaller chance of finishing in a worse position, and a greater chance of drafting where you finish in the standings or better.

Case in point the Canucks have dropped twice the past two drafts to 5th overall.

I'm sick of getting draft picks in a worse position in the draft compared to where the team finishes.
