Elias Petterson's Team Wins the SHL Championship and He is Playoffs MVP

Elias' team Växsjö just won the SHL playoffs, sweeping Skellefteå in the finals. Elias was named playoff MVP. I thought that this deserved a thread of its own.

He is also the highest scoring under 20 player in Elitserien/SHL history (there are some familiar names on that list....)

Article about Elias in one of Sweden's biggest newspapers:

Quote

He came like a whirlwind - disguised as a prospect

Skellefteå. When Elias Pettersson signed with Växjö, he was a promising player that could turn into something big.

A year later we have seen a breakthrough that we will talk about for many years.

But he could just as easily have ended up with the opponents, Skellefteå.

On the ice in the Skellefteå arena, a happy 19-year-old goes around trying to understand that he has just become Swedish champion for the first time in his young life.

Växjö has taken the club's second SM gold and Elias Pettersson has been the playoff's brightest.

A development that few could have predicted in this short space of time.

When Elias Pettersson signed with Växjö on April 6 last year, the sports manager / CEO Henrik Evertsson told the website:

"Elias is one of Swedish hockey's best prospects and of course someone we are very pleased to have signed. It will be very exciting to to see what he will be able to accomplish in the SHL in the coming years. "

One year later, we can see that Elias only needed a season make an impression - and it will be a long time before we see him again in SHL.

Next season he will play in Vancouver - at the moment there is nothing that says that he won't be able to take a roster spot there.

Sure, he is still a bit thin, but strength isn't always shown in the number of kilos.

The fact that Elias constantly wants to develop and challenge himself - something that makes him always stay on the ice after practice - means that he has found ways to use the kilos that he has in the best way.

The 19-year-old's best asset is his head - and his Hockey IQ.

His mind is often a step ahead of his opponents.

And he isn't afraid of pain, he always goes to the dirty areas where it hurts to be, but where scoring chances are created.

A lot of people have helped him during the road to the Swedish Championship, but two people deserve an extra mention.

The Växsjö head coach, Sam Hallam, has given Elias confidence and let his level of play, and not his age, determine what role he's gotten on the team.

The other is his linemate Robert Rosén. The center Rosén's wisdom on the ice has played a big part in the fact that Elias Pettersson scored at such an amazing rate.

Prior to the 2016-17 season, Elias' big brother Emil Pettersson signed with Skellefteå, but in December, the contract was terminated and Emil moved to Växjö.

In Växjö, Emil reached his full potential - developing talented players is something that Växjö has done really well in recent years.

Emil's success led to a contract with Nashville, which meant that the brothers did not get a chance to play together. But it is clear that Emil's development in Småland (the part of Sweden that Växsjö is located in) contributed to the fact that little brother chose Växjö.

Had Emil and Skellefteå been a better combination, much could have been different for Elias as well as Växjö and Skellefteå.

I translated it really quick so there's probably a few major mistakes, but you'll understand most of it.

Elias will look good in a Canuck jersey next year along with his country man Dahlen and possibly Dahlin.

I wonder if TG will sit him the first two games to add to his development..lol

And before the season is out possibly Karlsson.  You can gaurantee he's taking an interest in what's going on over here in Vancouver given we are one of the few teams that can afford to sign him what he will want, and that Ottawa was looking to shop him (starting in December).   He gets to decide where he will go if Ottawa feels that he will likely go somewhere else next summer, and it won't cost much unless we are playoff bound.

Imagine all the Swedes we would have on our team, the Sedins would be proud, and maybe come out of retirement and join the team in the post season too.  Ok this is almost completely fantasy now, but not out of the realm of possibility.

We get a good, high 1st round pick in one of those forwards and if we can get Karlsson, we wouldn't need to draft Boqvist.

Perfect scenario hockey-wise but would it make sense financially for us down the road? Say 3-4 years?

If they could work things out and makes sense financially, Karlsson is a heck of a player.

Its going to be hard to temper expectations for this kid after his season.  Kid knows how to dominate

i dunno

could only score on 2 clear breakaways

fell down after the 1st one . clearly has balance issues

wonder if we could get a 4th rounder for him

to fill out our draft roster this off season since we are missing that pick

Please hockey gods, let his game translate DIRECTLY to the NHL.

I'm predicting a Nathan Mckinnion

like impact in his first season. He's got a small similar frame for their entry seasons.  He's gonna dangled, snipe and squeeze by the competiton baby!

45-75 points is my prediction as wide of a margin as that is. Boeser was on a 73 point season pace before injury so totally reasonable. The twins helped Boeser on the PP but Pettersson plays the same spot as hank on the PP but he can absolutely light it up from there.
