Elias Petterson's Team Wins the SHL Championship and He is Playoffs MVP

He looks like a keeper, there are 4 teams that are re-examining there scouts no doubt.

He definitely looks like he could make the team next year, that said, I hope they leave him in Sweden for one more season.

Two reasons for this;

One - To bulk up a little more

Two - The Seattle expansion draft.

If too many players have the required years or games in it could cause the Canucks a protection problem. Even though Seattle's arena is supposed to be ready for the 2020/21 season that is the CBA year and the expansion could be delayed by a year, that year included or added to contracts.

Besides one year in Sweden will still give all the fans a ton of hope knowing how well he is doing especially if he does even better there and maybe allow the Canucks one more year at selecting in the top 5.

Gradin really did his work again scouting out this kid. He should get a bonus for these Euro's his scouting group has found.

Hammarstrom was the primary scout on this one guardian. He was also behind the foppa selection for the flyers, but pretty good post all around man.

We get a good, high 1st round pick in one of those forwards and if we can get Karlsson, we wouldn't need to draft Boqvist.

Perfect scenario hockey-wise but would it make sense financially for us down the road? Say 3-4 years?

If they could work things out and makes sense financially, Karlsson is a heck of a player.

Absolutely he's a top five player in the NHL, and has been for years.  Best guess is he will get 12 million on the open market for full term.  That's a lot of money for any team to dole out, but history has shown us that when top players get paid top dollars (Crosby and Malkin), the cap ramifications lessen over time and half way through their contracts somebody else is making a couple more million a year.

He's publicly stated he wants full market value to stay in Ottawa.

Vancouver could sign Karlsson and sign Boeser for around 7-7.5 x 8, and still make it under the cap with available funds, and by the time Petterssons up for his raise L.E. will be off the books or already gone (Seattle?).    We'd be up against the cap again,  maybe even handcuffed to the same degree as CHI, but if that were the case we'd be truly kicking ass which is a good thing, and no doubt some of our auxiliary guys will have to be traded so the team could take advantage of guys on ELCs to give us some breathing room ( traded for picks).

If Pettersson reaches superstardom early that would be a great problem to have,  so worst case scenario it would look something like this once he gets his second contract:

Horvat 6 x 6 (2 years left)

Boeser 8 x 8 (5 years left)

Karlsson 12x7 (4 years left)

Pettersson 10x8 ( 8 years left)

Possibly add this year's first rounder the following year plus Demko and Juolevi but I wouldn't project them much differently than what we are currently paying Edler and Markstrom for their second contracts.

We shouldnt hold players back if they are ready, he's nineteen now and by all accounts ready for the NHL, in fact probably could have this year.

Vancouver shouldn't be too worried about the expansion draft, with the Sedins retired we have two more spots available for protection and won't have to protect L.E. either, in fact shouldn't in hopes they select him.

We can also pay a little more to keep someone else we like if we have to, which really isn't a big deal given the glut of forwards we have coming up.  The amount of thread time we had over the thought of losing Gaunce last time was ludicrous, it wont matter at all who they pick this time given that we should have a line up of guys waiting to fill that role.

One of Tanev or Edler could be gone by then too, coming the other way somebody underaged with no protection required or picks or both.

Elias' team Växsjö just won the SHL playoffs, sweeping Skellefteå in the finals. Elias was named playoff MVP. I thought that this deserved a thread of its own.

He is also the highest scoring under 20 player in Elitserien/SHL history (there are some familiar names on that list....)

Article about Elias in one of Sweden's biggest newspapers:

https://www.dn.se/sport/ishockey/han-kom-som-en-virvelvind-forkladd-till-talang/

I translated it really quick so there's probably a few major mistakes, but you'll understand most of it.

What I really like is looking at the +/- stats.  He scored that many goals, while still ending up a +13, and this is in the minors.

What's with Daniel, the goon, way ahead of the pack with 18 PIM (and 14)?
