My thoughts

Ottawa actually has a pretty young defense. They had 3 dmen under 23 play significant number of games and that ignores Chabot. Karlsson plans will really determine need and they have big needs offensively as well. They gave away Dhalen and really have no offensive talent in their system, take a look at their draft picks. They need everything and in all reality have better (albeit weak) depth with young D.

Arizona also actually has a lot of young depth on D and Kotkaneimi just had a great showing at the u18s and is a center, and the highest ranked center in the draft. Arizona is weak all over but scouts are saying he could be #1c material. Teams are built with 1c and 1d and Strome is likely not a 1c. I can actually see Montreal reaching on him to be honest. He is going to be the big mover up in the draft.

i also don’t think teams worry so much about right or left shots as a way to fill their lineup. They care about best player available and Right Ds are talked about a lot because they are actually rare. But a winger being a right wing or left wing typically won’t make a major difference unless two players are almost even and then the team goes for positional need (thus if left or right shot it only then matters). Obviously if a center it matters little and certainly isn’t a reason not to take the best center in the draft.

I wouldn't put too much stock into U18 performances. Kristian Vsalainen destroyed that tournament last year and ended up dropping at the draft.

More and more players can play both sides so yeah if the yotes have guys that can switch over no issues.  We do agree I think that the sens and yotes taking a D is not a slam dunk by any means.   Centers are always in demand and there are a few good ones available and they are being undervalued by the pundits at the moment.   Walhstrom is also right winger and center.

I wouldn't put too much stock into U18 performances. Kristian Vsalainen destroyed that tournament last year and ended up dropping at the draft.

Its not the primary driver, I have seen alot of his play. He will be one of the steals of the draft. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as high as 3 (Montreal given their need for a 1C). He's outscored Laine at the same age in the same league as an idea of how little respect he's getting. European players seem to trade at a discount to north americans because they aren't front and center for media and scouts like CHL and College players are. Petterson is a perfect example. In a redraft of last year he's likely 2nd or 3rd overall.

I think you might want to go double check that.

I think if you flip Hughs and Boquist, you might just have the top ten nailed.

I’m wondering if Boquist is a faller this draft, much like Liljegren was last draft?

Will Quinn Hughs be available for the Canucks at 7th?

That might depend how well he does at the world championships.  That tourney could really boost his stock if he looks good vs NHL men.

Canucks @ 7

My Choices:

A: What wont be there

  • Dahlin
  • Svetchnikov
  • Bouchard
  • Zadina
  • Tkachuk

B: What probably won't drop to them that I like:

  • All of the above except Tkatchuk
  • Hughes

C: What might be possible to take and how they range in my mind:

  • Wahlstrom
  • Hughes
  • Dobson
  • Kotkaniemi

D. Players I would trade down to get if one or two of them were overlooked and I could get extra picks (and still get a great player):

  • Wahlstrom
  • Dobson
  • Kotkaniemi
  • Boqvist
  • Ty Smith

If you guys get a chance you tube Jesperi Kotkaniemi.  This kid will have the size and grit to make an impact.  He's my choice.

Aside from Bouchard I'm not stoked on soft undersized defencemen... I think we need to be very cautious.

Who are you referring to as a soft under sized dman? Hughes? Boqvist?

Hughes in my opinion will be the biggest talent to come out of the top 10. He might be undersized but  brings a better overall game than his defensive counterparts. He is elite talent that teams will regret overlooking couple of years down the road. He might be small but he will make players of all size look silly. I have faith in JB that if Hughes is available at 7 he takes him. The only other franchise changing defenceman from this draft.
