Canucks @ 7

My Choices:

A: What wont be there

  • Dahlin
  • Svetchnikov
  • Bouchard
  • Zadina
  • Tkachuk

B: What probably won't drop to them that I like:

  • All of the above except Tkatchuk
  • Hughes

C: What might be possible to take and how they range in my mind:

  • Wahlstrom
  • Hughes
  • Dobson
  • Kotkaniemi

D. Players I would trade down to get if one or two of them were overlooked and I could get extra picks (and still get a great player):

  • Wahlstrom
  • Dobson
  • Kotkaniemi
  • Boqvist
  • Ty Smith

I like the way you're breaking this down.  I'm not sure I agree with your rankings.

A is good.  Bouchard is the most NHL ready D so will go early

B Hughes is next

C so that leaves Dobson if you're like me and think that D is what the Canucks will take

D  Kotkaniemi is the dark horse imo

I think Hughes and Boqvist will be gone by the time we pick. My bet is that we have a choice between Bouchard , Wahlstrom and Dobson. There is a slight chance that Tkachuk drops down.

I would take Bouchard if they think he will not be hampered by skating. We have a big slow guy now. I think there is a strong chance that Wahlstrom is the pick.

Ty  Smith anyone?

Can this management pull off a deal for another 1st round pick?

I voted for Dobson for the Canucks. And yet, somehow, seeing the Blackhawks "draft" Oliver Wahlstrom makes me upset and concerned...:( It's like that suggestion by I believe, Sigmund Freud: if you're not sure which of 2 choices to pick, flip a coin, and if you end up being upset with the outcome, then you know which choice you're really leaning towards.

Notes: I'm basing this off of fit, just as much as the "tiers" of prospects. I doubt this actually happens, but my thinking process goes like:

Svechnikov on the other side of Aho is going to be a treat to watch in the future. I couldn't remember if Carolina was a little biased against Russians, but you really can't go wrong here. I also like the fit of Zadina to Montreal. Seeing as he plays decently close to the team, their scouts will have watched enough of him and with the all the rumors, Zadina would be a nice replacement for Pacioretty.

I see Ottawa not being high on Boqvist, they have a decent stock of guys on the right. Karlsson hasn't yet moved. Their left side on the other hand is still a mess. I don't see them being high on Tkachuk's physical acumen either, so I see them being interested in Hughes. The Coyotes are thrilled to draft the son of their former captain, also that's an element they really would want to fill in, a physical power forward with potential higher than Crouse. With Detroit on the line, they go with Boqvist. They've got needs everywhere, but they don't have any high end defense prospects yet.

At our pick, I'm going with the sentiment that our scouts like Dobson higher than Bouchard. I like all of Wahlstrom, Bouchard and Dobson, but I see Dobson being the better fit with everything that Benning has described wanting in a player.

Chicago then takes the future replacement for Keith/Hjalmarsson. They've got a nice spot on the right side that can be filled sooner rather than later, and Wahlstrom isn't exactly the biggest need for them, seeing as their RW depth is decent for the next while. And then to end this, Edmonton takes the best defender left.

What exactly has Benning said about Bouchard that makes you make the assumption, because that's what is, that he ranks Dobson higher than Bouchard other than not talking about him?

Last year did he ever mention Pettersson before the draft?  Unless you're related to the souting staff and they have loose lips, none of us on the CDC is privy to that knowledge.

Not many lists rank Dobson higher than Bouchard, especially ones that come from actual scouting analysis (THN ranks him  7 Intertnational Scouting Services 6, where as Dobson is ranked 9 at both).

I like them both and trust Benning to make the right choice and not blow it like he did with Juolevi and possibly Virtanen, but don't pretend to have inside knowledge to what they are actually targeting.  If anything his history about talking draft picks leans heavily towards slight of hand, smoke and mirrors.  At least that my observation.  Yes I've seen the quotes, just because there's none about Bouchard doesn't mean he won't take him if he's still there.

Hughes or Boquist.  I think JB is very smart at picking players that have high ceilings, but take a bit longer to mature.  Look at Jake blossoming now!  He’s going to be amazing!  And Juiolevi is likely to be in our top four next season, and playing 20 plus minutes every game!

The more I see Dobson in the Memorial Cup final, the more I like him.

Unfortunately so will a lot of other GM's too.

True, Dobson might move up, but that means Hughes or Boqvist falls to us.  Those two might have more offensive upside than Dobson?

Absolutely, with the exception of Juolevi who had the highest floor and was considered the safe pick for defenseman that year.  It's early yet so there's hope yet that Juolevi meets expectations, but at least for now it's at best uncertain that he was the right choice.  For perspective he was outscored by Bouchard on a still decent London team draft plus one, this year Bouchard outscored the next highest teammate by over 20 points on a gutted team.   Ok I'm just plugging who I think is this years safest pick after Dahlin of course.  Could be  Hughes or Boqvist are the better picks long term, Dobson too.  Will be exciting for sure
