Proposal for 20-21 within the organization

Recommended Posts

proposal for a team outlook by 20-21. Hypothetically speaking we tank next year and get the No.1 pick next draft. And maybe/hopefully (do it Benning!!) we trade assets for picks in the 2nd and 3rd round this year. All within the organization. Thoughts?

Jonah Gadjovich LW          Jack Hughes C           Brock Boeser RW
Bulat Shafigullin LW           Bo Horvat C                Jake Virtanen RW
Jonathan Dahlen LW          Elias Pettersson C      Kole Lind RW
Petrus Palmu LW               Jake Wise C               Zack MacEwen RW

Adam Samuelsson LD               Evan Bouchard RD
Olli Juolevi LD                            Matt Brassard RD
Jack Rathbone LD                     Xavier Bouchard RD

Thatcher Demko G
Michael DiPietro G

Extra Skaters
Adam Gaudette C
Sean Durzi RD

Also my mock 2018 top 10 draft just for kicks based on organizational needs, not by actual rankings:

1.Rasmus Dahlin BUF
2.Filip Zadina CAR
3.Andrei Svechnikov MTL
4.Quinn Hughes OTT
5.Brady Tkachuk ARI
6.Oliver Wahlstrom DET
7.Evan Bouchard VAN
8.Noah Dobson CHI
9.Joe Veleno NYR
10.Ty Smith EDM

Future teams rarely follow the mould of "all our prospects eventually join our main roster". Odds are that many of our current prospects are either traded some day or don't quite pan out. Consider that 10 years ago, everyone's future rosters had Sauve, Hodgson, and White leading the way.

I don't get it.... 3 year future goggles? That's pretty high tech.

You're thinking of Reservior Dogs.

We have a Coach Green and Coach Brown. So that'll have to do for now

Guessing three years into the future is not such a bad thing except often some details will be very blurred such as non NHL players making teams.

But a management group can look to contracts, staggered to allow cap space for example.

Looking into what could be that year's FA's.

Estimating the existing NHL players/team progress.

Guessing that far into the future has to be less fantasy and more based on "hard numbers" for any accuracy.

Things like guessing Horvat's ceiling may depend upon the role expected, as a third line center he will be excellent, as a second line center he okay to very good depending upon the rest of the team, as a first line center he may only be adequate to decent. Very good a FO's. But he is on the team at center for sure.

Virtanen has great speed, he can be a pretty good third/fourth line guy for sure, potential for 2nd line duties if coached in that direction his speed will be valuable even as a PK guy.

Cap usage should not be like a bell curve where all of it is used, top to bottom but there are only so many spots where the top money is spent, the three or four core players should be limited to 30 to 40% of the total cap. IE; 80 mil cap, 24 to 32 mil used for superstar players, that is 1, 2, or 3 players, Karlsson, Tavaeras and Doughty as examples each signed for a big signing bonus and then out of FA to fit under these ideas. 12 mil a year each. Leaving 56 to 48 mil for the rest of the team, a fair amount even for 3 to 6 mil guys.

One guess that may be more secure is the end of the CBA, now planning around this might be more than guessing. Plan for the team to still be rebuilding for the next two years and plan for a cessation of hockey for one year. Plan it out so being DFL for the next two years gives the opportunity for the top selection for the lost year. Even if there is only a partial stoppage, that year can still be the last as a bad team. The team would then have 7 years of top 10 picks and that should build a rather strong core, three good scoring lines.
