[Proposal] Van - Avs

Recommended Posts

So I was just reading about other teams rosters and what pundits think their teams' off season plans should be when I came across Colorado and this quote:

"Jonathan Bernier is also an unrestricted free agent this summer. He is a very strong backup that has the ability to run with starter’s role when Varlamov gets injured. He problem is that he has a hard time staying healthy himself. With Varly’s injury concerns, I would want to see a backup that is a little more dependable than Bernier."

Now Bernier put up some really good numbers and even played in the playoffs this year. With that said I see Bernier using those numbers to try and get a longer term deal and/or steal a starting job. Unless Bernier is comfortable taking a 1 or 2 year deal as a backup to Varlamov again due to the team exceeding expectations I don't see him back again.

Vancouver on the other hand has a backup goalie in Nilsson that currently has his name in the media a lot right now due to winning gold this summer with an amazing 8-0 record including 3 shutouts. One in the gold medal game. He has the ability to stay healthy and could play the year behind Varlamov with no commitment beyond the year.

On the other hand it is probably time for Vancouver to get Demko into 15-20 games in the NHL to see where he is at. He has put in his work in the AHL and deserves the shot to play so moving out Nilsson is a more appetizing option than sending Demko to the AHL or putting Nilsson on waivers.

So just a simple trade really.

To Colorado:
Anders Nilsson

To Vancouver
2018 4th

Colorado has a backup goalie able to steal games for them if Varlamov goes down - Vancouver reacquires a pick in the 4th round to make up for the pick lost in Pouliot trade.

Thats it.

That's it....?  But where does Tanev go then?

LOL. I have my own opinions on if Tanev should be traded and where he would end up but that has been talked about nonstop on every NHL forum available.

I wanted to try and get us a draft pick using other assets.

I like it.  It makes us whole and makes some sense.  Demko can always be bailed out by management if he falls on his face, which doesn't seem likely, and nexr year it's going to be tough anyways, and your bang on with Nilsson getting some press now's the time to see what we could get.

Alternatively we could trade them Tanev and a 3rd for 6 1st's and the naming rights to Barrie's first born child.

If Demko plays out of his mind in the pre-season then I would consider this.  Considering how Nilsson's World Hockey Championship performance is part of the premise behind the trade, I won't touch into it too much as you think that it'd be a value booster for a trade while I think it'd be worth keeping him for that reason, but I digress.

The thing that I'd like to bring up is Marky's workload this past season.

Of the list above (every goalie who played 60 games or more), only he and Jimmy Howard had losing records (Lundqvist and Talbot had even records), and neither Vancouver or Detroit has done particularly well this year.  I just hope that Jacob has enough of a backup available that he might be able to split more games with the backup so that he could potentially improve his win percentage with fewer starts (might be more fresh).  If Demko is better suited to start in the minors anyways (I'd rather have him there rather than riding 40 games on the bench) then maybe it's better to keep Nilsson.  At his age he can still fit with the team's timeline anyways and there really shouldn't be a rush to trade him, esp. for only a 4th.

Good proposal, this trade is one of many minor trades Benning should be looking at . I'm sure if the Avs aren't interested there are others that will be. I will be disappointed if Benning doesn't gain some draft picks at the draft.

I think I'd rather just start the year with Nilsson.  Maybe he can increase his value further or he takes over as the starter.

Agreed...

If he can get a strong start next year he will be worth much more as a pending UFA stopgap bandaid for a injured goalie out there. Keeping hin also gives Demko more time as starter in Utica to round out his game.
