To the teams whose players' signings I've just announced: if you sent in an offer for a player and their name hasn't shown up in these last two posts, counter-offers and responses will be coming tomorrow afternoon, hopefully.

I just needed to clear the queue after we had 68 (!!!) re-signing offers or enquiries.

Columbus Blue Jackets - Draft Recap

First we won the cup. Then we won the regular season. And now...we won the draft? It wasn't something I was expecting, especially since, as of the trade deadline, we had zero 2019 picks. But after a series of moves to shed salary and get younger, we ended up with a number of picks, and seemed to get outstanding value out of them, starting with the most significant riser in the draft:

#19 - Moritz Seider, D - Taken 6th by Detroit (+13)

I wasn't planning on acquiring this pick, but with Seider still on the board I made a trade to acquire it - very happy I did. Not only does Moritz have high NHL upside, I suspect he'll score even higher in our league.

#23 - John Beecher, C - Taken 30th by Boston (-7...but not really)

I expected Beecher to go around 40th, so this also seems like a win. But I reached on him because I feel his game will translate very well to Puck's scoring system.

#83 - Dillon Hamaliuk, LW - Taken 55th by San Jose (+28)

Dillon is a big-bodied guy who will also score well in Puck if he makes the show. I had explored trading up to the 60's to get him earlier, so I was very happy when he still fell to me here. There were some concerns about a knee injury he suffered this year, but if San Jose feels well enough about him to draft him in the 2nd, that is reassuring.

#94 - Mattias Norlinder, D - Taken 64th by Montreal (+30)

Didn't know much about him, other than @Monty liked him and drafted him for us in EKL. So when I saw how far he fell, I took a chance on him, and it paid off.

#97 - Noah Cates, LW - 2017 5th round pick by Philly

The one unsigned prospect who went back into the draft that I was targeting. Noah has been refining his game as a 2-way player in the NCAA, and made an impact with the USA WJC team. He probably won't end up a top-6 player, but I think the odds are very good that he'll develop into a productive bottom-6 one.

#110 - Samuel Ersson, G - 2018 5th round pick by Philly

Ersson had a year to remember. Not only was he named best Junior player in Allsvenskan, he was also awarded best goaltender, and MVP of the league (which is voted on by the players). We already have Ustimenko (also a Philly goaltending prospect), and we expect one of the 2 will be used as a trade chip by Philly IRL, while the other will have a good shot to back up Carter Hart one day.

#115 - Aaron Huglen, RW - Taken 102nd by Buffalo (+13)

Huglen is another guy I know little about, but I was looking for a RW, and he was one of the higher ranked ones still on the board.

#130 - Riley Damiani, C - 2018 5th round pick by Dallas

Damiani had a fantastic year for the Kitchener Rangers, with 30G and 85Pts in 58GP. I was planning on grabbing him later in the draft, but then a report came out during the draft that he was invited to Team Canada's camp for the WJCs this year, so I figured he might be on more radars.

#139 - Declan Chisholm, D - 2018 5th round pick by Winnipeg

Chisholm doubled his production in his D+1 season, and has become a fairly highly-regarded prospect in Winnipeg. With fellow Jets' D prospects Kovacevic and Gawanke already in the system, the odds are pretty good that one or two of them will become regular NHL-ers.

#143 - Tyler Tucker, D - 2018 7th round pick by St. Louis

Tucker was viewed as a throwback enforcer-type defenseman, who probably didn't have the offensive skills to make it to the show (hence the 7th round selection). But then last year he surprised everyone, putting up 14 goals (!!) and 59 points in 68 games for the Barrie Colts. But he still didn't forget his roots, as evidenced by his 105 PIMs. If he ends up making the NHL, I suspect he'll score well in Puck, even just in hits and fights.

#152 - John St. Ivany, D - 2018 4th round pick by Philly

John (formerly Jack...I think) is a big D-man who was on Team USA's WJC team last year. He is more of a defensive specialist, but has enough puck-moving skills to have a good shot at making it one day. I don't think he'll score as well in Puck as someone like Tucker, but I think his odds of making the NHL are better.

It was a fantastic draft for the team, which is surprising, because this is only the 2nd draft where I've really been in control (Monty handled the previous drafts), and targeted current draftees (I usually stick to scraps from previous drafts). Even players I almost took (such as Alexei Protas at #130 and Mikhail Abramov at #143) were big risers. I tended to favour bigger guys because of the Puck scoring system...but perhaps the NHL GMs are also valuing size more than the past couple years also?

However, I suddenly find myself swimming in D prospects, and don't have much for 2020 picks. So if any of my defense prospects (excluding Seider and Kovacevic) interest you, send me a PM.

Typically “try” to stay out of fantasy threads I’m not apart of. But frickin LOVE Norlinder. Dude can skate. Doesn’t matter he was second year eligible and passed over last year in the NHL draft. You can’t teach an average skater at 18 years old to improve to where Norlinder is at 19 years old.

So this might not be relevant at all, I know nothing about norlinder's game, but nothing makes me want to throw my remote at the tv more than players with the skating who don't have other tools to take advantage of it. Watching Grabner whiff on two breakaways a game, or seeing kapanen use his speed to turnstile the defender, gain the zone and then throw a bad angle shot on net or dump it into the corner is just soul crushing.

Oh, so we don't send offers beforehand at all?

I mean, you can if you want, just to get it out of the way.

That being said, players won't be considering/responding to offers until July 1.

Is the cap staying at 83?

Yep! but we won't raise it again until it passes 83.

Wait, what? Why are we not taking the NHL cap number? Isn't that the friggin point?

Before the cap was announced, when we created the new league, we defaulted the cap in as the projected 83m. Teams have been since adjusting their teams to that number since that’s what we put in at the time. Jazz or MM can speak on it more so than I can, but I myself felt we kind of jumped the gun by moving the cap to 83 in the new league instead of not changing it until the change was official, so because of that a lot of teams have been crunching their numbers off the limit we set previously (83)

Edit: when I mention Jazz or MM can speak on it more, I just mean they’ve been in the league and commissioners longer so that have more expertise than me!

It was the consensus of the commissioners to keep it at 83 as we'd already set it there from the previous IRL estimates, but if the general feeling from GMs is to have it to match the real NHL, we can look at bringing it down.

By the way, I'll say this about free agency:

offers with no pitch will not be considered. It doesn't matter if you offer 7x15m, if the player does not receive a pitch, they will ignore the offer completely. As well, the better the pitch (and offer), the better the chance of the player accepting your offer.

These are the same guidelines we used last year, so for older GMs, this shouldn't be a surprise.

I definitely vote on keeping it at the real NHL number, which has been the case every season in the league... And every other league, for that matter.

There are only a half-dozen teams that will be over an $81.5M cap, and half of them are already over an $83M one. So most GMs seem to have been prudent in making sure they left room for the possibility. If a few didn't (such as the dirty Rags)...well, that's on them.

agree. RL cap!
