2018 NHL Entry Draft Result - Calgary Flames

17OA - Rasmus Kupari

32OA - Ryan McLeod

48OA - Jett Woo

Trade - Jacob Larsson

It was a super busy entry draft these couple of days. We actually almost got the 3rd overall and 4th overall at one point but sadly there was a timing issue and it didn't work out. With that being said, we went into the draft looking to improve our defensive prospect depth and on the wing. However, it was impossible to pass on Kupari and McLeod when our picks came as they were too talented to miss, bolstering our already insane depth at centre with Matthews, MacKinnon, Barkov, and Staal. We deviated a bit from our goal but we really believe that Rasmus and Ryan will have great NHL careers. We did manage to do something right though as we are absolutely thrilled to be adding Jacob and Jett to our team. With no more picks now, @Brock Hard and I will be looking at acquiring playoff players for the upcoming season so feel free to PM us.

2018 CDC PUCK DRAFT TIME LIMITS

Due to the speed at which the draft has been going, we are extending the time limits for each pick in rounds four and five from 30 minutes to 1 hour. Keep in mind that if the draft is taking too long we will need to shorten the time back down so please make your picks promptly if possible.

To NYI: Jake McCabe, Jonny Brodzinski

To MIN: Semyon Varlamov

@Salter

Thanks MM for posting.

Cheers @Baer. for getting a deal done, we didn’t really have a need for Varlamov after acquiring Fleury, that would’ve been a lot of money tied up in goalies.

McCabe will help offset the loss of Chychrun who was moved in the Fleury Trade.

A combined look of our last 2 trades:

Marc-Andre Fleury, Jake McCabe, Jonny Brodzinski

for

Semyon Varlamov, Jakob Chychrun, Evgeny Svechnikov

Pretty happy how they turned out!

The Columbus Blue Jackets have placed Jim O'Brien on waivers. Unless claimed he will clear in 48 hours.

O'Brien played some games for the Senators last year, and scored some Fpts. Decent chance he may play even more this year, if Ottawa ends up clearing house as many expect. But just don't have room for him on the roster.

What I came here to post! The Buffaslug Sabreslugs would like to wish a hearty congratulations to one of their top prospects, Andreas Johnsson, on lifting the Calder Cup with the Toronto Marlies, Winning AHL playoff MVP (despite missing the first 4 games of the playoffs), and putting up 24 points in 16 playoff games. He won't play another game in the AHL likely, so we look forward to having him on our team next year. Good to go out on top.

Another heartfely congratulations to Mason Marchement, who scored the cup winning goal (albeit in a 6-1 victory). He's a recent signing, but just keeps playing better. And a third shout out to Miro Aaltonen, Johnsson's centre, who we hope will get NHL time next year as well.

We here in Columbus are glad we got ahead of the curve and pulled the trigger on Mike Hoffman.

Great player and all... ...but his b!%&# is cray-cray.

Draft may not be over entirely, but I’ve been done for a while.

Draft Review

Round 1

4th - Brady Tkachuk

This pick was big juicy gamble... we selected Tkachuk with the hope another player would be availible a few picks later (more likely to fall), so we could grab our higher ranked player and Tkachuk. The deal was in place, and both parties had wet themselves in excitement. @Tigs had other plans. :( (we also explored trading this pick...)

However, we are still very excited to draft our 4th ranked player at the 4th spot. He is the most NHL ready forward in the draft, and we hope he reaches his top potential. If not we have a guaranteed middle 6 winger who plays in all circumstances and hits like crazy.

13 - Joel Farabee

Traded Oettinger and Sikura for this pick, specifically for this player. It worked out! Plays a style that will work well in this scoring system, while also a natural playmaker. If that mix of talent reaches it’s top potential that’s a superstar.

16 - Akil Thomas

We are hoping this is Barzal 2.0. very similar play style. Has the puck a ton, super fast, and super skilled at playmaking. Well like by teammates and very driven kid. Already taking post-secondary courses and owns a clothing line.

23 - Jake Wise

The most under-ranked guy of the draft. Was talked about as a top 10 pick over a year ago, but got injured and missed half the season this year. When he returned he produced at a top 10 draft eligible player (better than Wahlstrom and Farabee). This, all while being the 2nd line C. Jack Hughes looks to be a lock for 1st overall next year, so it’s not really a slight that he wasn’t playing as the top center. We’ve looked long and hard to find out the reason for his drop in rankings and it’s universally because he got injured. Ridiculous.

Round 3

72 - Johnny Gruden

Raiders head coach has some potential...

74 - Adam Samuelsson

Last year we drafted a player with lower potential (ceiling) but really high floor (Geekie) and this is the same with this pick. I’d say 95% chance he is a 5-7 defencemen in the nhl in 2 years. Who knows after that. He hits and blocks like crazy, and has elite level defensive instincts. Safe pick to get a nhler out of him.
