[Proposals] Rebuild (Weaponizing our Cap Space)

Recommended Posts

Time to use our cap space and weaponize it for cap strapped teams ...

1.  Trade Nikita Tryamkin and Reid Boucher to WASH for Brooks Orpik, Philipp Grubauer, and 2nd Rd Pick (FLA) - WASH frees up cap space to re-sign Carlsson, Wilson.  Samsonov will backup Holtby

2.  Trade Grubauer, Bartschi, Tyler Motte to CAR for Noah Hanafin and 4th Rd pick (ARI)

3.  Trade Tanev, Markstrom, Gagner, Orpik (50% retained) to BUFF for O'Reilly and 2019 1st Rd Pick (SJ)

4.  Trade Sutter and Hutton to EDM for Nugent-Hopkins

5.  Trade Nugent-Hopkins, Stecher, 2019 SJ 1st Rd Pick, 2nd Rd Pick (FLA) to OTT for Karlsson

6.  Trade Goldobin and Del Zotto (50% retained) to NASH for Dante Fabbro

7.  Draft Dobson / Hughes / Bouchard / Boqvist

8.  Sign Tavares - 7 years $11 million

CAP ~$70,000,000

Still have room to sign a UFA forward (eg. Vanek, Perron, Neil) and UFA veteran D-man (Enstrom, Schenn, de Haan)

that would be the single largest week of trading in NHL history. Fails at step 1 tho. Grubauer for Marky maybe, since Grubauer is looking for a starter role and WSH wants a good backup. Orpik isn't a cap dump. Boucher isn't getting a 7th, let alone a 2nd. Nik is a giant question mark right now.

Maybe it's just me, but I think 'weaponize' is the most ridiculous phrase to use in relation to sports trades.  It's like someone heard it on TV once and now they think it's cool, but it's not.

Actually as soon a salary caps were introduced the term "weaponize the cap" started being used. The available cap space has been a trade item for some teams.

About the cap, isn't it odd in the NHL that no team has ever been publicly scrutinized for being under or over the cap? The Yotes were under the cap minimum and were supposed to give up draft picks one year, that was in evidence at the bankruptcy hearings, I just found it odd that there have not been any mistakes at all. Thank goodness for CapGeek and now Cap Friendly.

I only just started hearing it this past little while, and then it started popping up in CDC thread titles.  It's just one of those phrases that irritates me.

I'm so glad you said this. this phrase seems to be the flavour of the month on these boards.

have  a look at your post

and explain, please.. how your approach contains any sense of balance at all

the canucks are mostly trading multiples for a superior talent

you think all the gms of other teams are stupid?

i guess they must all be closet canuck fans

and your trade 3 proposal is utterly ridiculous

buffalo is going to give up 4 roster spots for that trade? really ??

and on top of that problem

that trade is over the top one sided

Reminds me of that story about the guy who started with a red paperclip and through 14 trades got a house in saskatchewan.

But here we basically get Hanafin, O'Reilly, Karlsson, and Fabbro.  Losing no high end players....

Might as well get JT too.

It's my least favorite word. That and "blogosphere" and "twitterverse".

Please, no more.
