That's really good news.  JT will most likely see the positive changes occurring (led by the new GM) and re-sign.  Then there is no chance for us to make a HUGE mistake signing JT.

Isles now have Lou as GM which isn't a bad improvement on Snow.  Trotz as potential head coach.  Some cap space, Tavares possibly re-signing there and the 11th and 12th pick this year as well as some ok prospects.  Maybe they finally pull themselves out of that 20 year hole they've been in

Was Snow really that bad anyways? He gets a bum rap for some poor moves made or some bad contracts, but all GMs make poor moves and give out bad contracts. He seemed to amass a bunch of solid prospects but could never overcome inadequate goaltending.

Overall, except for a couple of absolute homeruns with the Oilers (courtesy of Chia-pet), he's been below average. He's had years of Tavares at a bargain rate, with nothing to show for it.

Think of this - he had Tavares, Lee, Bailey, Barzal, and De Haan for a combined cap hit of $13.7M last year, and totally wasted it. Lou Lam will probably do more to stabilize the franchise this offseason (first coach, then goaltender, then...?) than Garth did in multiple years.

Actually yes Snow was that bad.  Since 2006/2007 the Isles made the playoffs 5 times.  Drafted top ten 6 times, top five 5 of those 6 times.  Coming in he had a solid stable of prospects but managed to flub it all repeatedly.  The DiPietro signing was just the start.  Aside from owning the Oilers completely he's actually had a very sub par trade record as well

In all honesty his drafting wasn't the worst but with 6 of ten picks in the top 10 during his tenure it also wasn't spectacular either.

He gets a lot of flack but I do believe much of it is warranted

Official.

And the next tweet will read:  "Islanders News:  President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello announced today that the team has re-signed John Tavares to a new 8-year deal worth $80m."

This is a great move by the Islanders. Not just in terms of potentially helping convince Tavares to sign.

Whether JT stays there or not, the Islanders need stability and an identity. Trotz is one of the best in the business at creating a team wide culture of accountability. That is the biggest positive for the Isles here imho.

Come on man! Imagine getting jt... How could it go wrong? It's acquiring a star. Anything 10.5million or less I'd love to hand him.
