If Hughes really was "NHL ready" this year, it would be an incredible achievement.  Compare this to a really good defenceman in the league who's about the same size - Ryan Ellis.  Ellis put up really good numbers for Canada in the WJC at both the U18 and U20 level.  He was a dominant offensive d-man in Junior.  Still it took him three years post draft to even play half an NHL season and five years to become full time.  With a January birthday, Ellis had an advantage in WJC qualification years so don't try to compare those to each other straight off.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that patience is going to be a virtue here (and with pretty much every prospect).  Ellis was a terrific young undersized defenceman and it took several years to break in to the NHL.  If it only takes Hughes until next year it's a huge win.

TBH if Hughes turns out like Ellis I would be pretty disappointed. His max point total in a season is 38 points. For a player that had the gaudy point totals in junior I would've thought he'd do a better job translating that into NHL numbers, especially in the new NHL.

I think we had Hughes second, only after Dahlin.  However, after watching Hughes play over the next couple years, people will be saying, “That Quinn Hughes should have gone first.”

I would say Dahlin could probably do most of what Hughes can do, but add in the size, a shot, and ready defensive play at 18 years old. Love the Hughes pick, but I would take Dahlin 10/10 times if we got the chance.

Not arguing at all but it is far too early to make that assessment,  I do see it as a possible outcome, but I need to see it happen.

Thats all.

Thank you. Nice to see classy fans and playful banter.

The great thing about hockey is if there were not so many variables, the Oilers would already have about 2-3 Cups in the last 10 years.

I’m really hopeful that he’s forced to become more engaged defensively playing in Michigan this year.

He’s going to be a #1 all-situation-type defensemen this year. All he really needs to do his learn to keep his stick active and on the ice, improve his gap control, and be more sound positionally in his own zone. For someone with his skating and hockey IQ, these should be easy things to develop and will likely come naturally with more experience and playing time. Offensively, he’s already one of the best at his age and better than 90% of players older than him. Once the defensive game is here (even partly) he will be just fine. His D-game doesn’t even have to be great, just okay

Who the heck cares about defense, Quinn stated that his defense was underrated . Play him with a good defensive partner , give him offensive starts let him be creative . Let the goalie earn his pay check . I bet he is a plus player , you don't make a star player into defensive specialist . He doesn't have the size for the corner work. Run and gun Lets have 6 to 5 games not 2 to 1 games. Let these kids fly. Take the bit out of their mouth. Let er rip.

Everyone would have taken Dahlin even the people trying to make the case for Hughes.  People didn't start talking about Hughes being às good or better until AFTER we drafted him.  One of the more obvious examples of homerism out there.

From watching the u20 summer tourney, the thing that he does better than nearly any d man I have seen is force you to guard him.  You can’t over commit or he will burn you, try to hit him and he will make you miss, take your eyes off of him, he skates around you. Block the shot and open up the pass.

Hughes will have to be well defended everytime he hits the ice. That’s pretty awesome for a d man. I also think his game is seriously improving since the WC

Well said. Bang on.

He owned every hi light. Even ones for opposing players. The guy is just everywhere. Once the puck is on his stick, his line is in control. Whoever is responsible for this pick may have turned things around for us and I'm forcing myself to be extremely guarded here. All of a sudden there is light. EP, Boeser and and add in Palm, Lind Etc.....

Regardless, Hughes will be fun to watch in college just like Gaudette was last year and comes with the added bonus of Lockwood playing with him.  We will have a loaded Comets team to follow this year too. The WJC will be awesome this year with at least 3 maybe 4 prospects there.

I really think it may just come close to rivaling last season for prospect excitement.

...and once you do that, it opens up things for the rest of your team.  He already has the knack and vision to draw defenders and find the open man, likewise Juolevi is excellent at the no-look cross-ice passes in the o-zone.  Boeser, Pettersson, Dahlen, Gaudette, etc. gon' feast.

Were Dobson, Boqvist and Bouchard even playing? Not trying to be ignorant but didn't follow the tourney that closely.

How about the overtime game winner against Sweden though? Singlehandedly dismantled an entire line with 2 seconds left on the clock. Looks like he makes that play 10 times out of 10.

Dobson looked really good when he played, just not Hughes good:P

Boqvist was steady and did nothing spectacular, on the cusp of disappointing.

Any red flags about Bouchard going into the draft were the same coming out of this weekend, Oilers might be in trouble

Maybe what has taken some people by surprise is the hunger Hughes has for winning hockey games. The guy is a machine. Literally everywhere on the ice. Dahlin too, can skate circles around many players, and has great vision. His size and shot sets him apart, in some aspects, but Hughes is faster and more shifty. I agree though - I would have taken Dahlin 1st. But then I would have taken Hughes 2nd.

Yeah just digging up some stats now. Dobson looked solid. Typical Canada D-Man style. Not super flashy. Stoked Canada looked so good while cheering on Quinn individually. Thanks for the feedback.

We cant really compare a tournament with NHL players/Men in it that he played in vs a tournament full of prospects or future draft picks. I would sure hope he looked better in this recent tournament, he was playing against his same age group. He should dominate against them as a high level pick. Dont know how well he did in the D Zone, I am sure he will only be able to do so much due to his size. But if he can be a wizard with his stick awareness that will go a long way. He just wont be the guy to move players out from the front of the net...but that doesnt really happen anymore or it gets called a penalty.

That's fair and I agree.  I have absolutely nothing negative to say about Hughes right now.  Saying that everyone would take Dahlin over Hughes is not a critisism.

Would you have taken Hughes 2nd at the time or just in hindsight? Now that his hunger to win games has surprised people?  If so I would say that you are alone.  The 2018 draft thread is there to flip through if you want to see where peoples heads were at.

People here started pumping Hughes as a top 2 guy AFTER he was ours.  I stand by my statement.  It's a pretty clear example of homerism.
