To be clear this has nothing to do with the player himself, just the missed opportunity to select any player that might be able to play in the NHL, this is a thread about the drafting guru and delaying or not building for a playoff team. They blew it again, three players ranked above this were available and they didn't get any new draft picks either, this isn't about a suggestion to trade for players, for draft picks or what I would do if I were GM, not even a suggestion to trade for a pick. I can't see how the few remaining posters can be so blind as to not recognize the mistake or envision what this team will look like with all these little players, stuck in the middle, just good enough to suck the money out of the pockets, at best one and done. 15 years will be wasted if they are not careful, the Oilers will look like a model franchise if this incompetence keeps up and the Canucks will be perpetual 8000 to 1 odds for winning the cup. This group will be too small even if they had McD on it. Go ahead and crucify me, this is just a forum and not important, none of the posters are important, they are just people with key boards, BTW the neg votes got me jobs, they showed I could reach the masses. I doubt anyone will be lining up and paying 2 1 hundred bucks to watch this kid for 3 years yet and thank goodness the contract is up before that. Size matters in the playoffs, small works for the regular season not the playoffs Petersson was also picked well ahead of his ranking, so was Boeser. Just because they are in an order, doesn’t mean that order is correct.

Puckster
I Kinda agree with the OP, WTF are we gonna do with another sub 6' f' ing Dman.......? play him in the minors??? Was this a Utica pick??? there were 6'+ D available at the pick and highly rated ones at that..... I have no idea wtf is going on in our GM's thinking.or...... we gonna trade him tanman & next years 1st for Ottawa's Carlson??? that would be cooool. but why on earth would the smallest D in the NHL want to get smaller. Size counts... especially on D I am so bummed out , gonna burn my Nucks hat. and root for the coilers....(NOT) why? tell me why??
TheGuardian_
What is this kid going to do if he can't handle big professional forwards? Didn't the team just get rid of Subban because he was too small? This guy is what, 1/2 " taller and 20 lbs lighter? Subban did great in the AHL against men, ,,,,, PK specialist? PP specialist? bottom 4 guy? Bottom 1 guy? This team needed a sure thing, even OJ could still become a bottom 4 guy maybe because of his size. Benning just covered his ass for another 2 years while waiting to see if this kid can even play in the NHL. What, next year they get #1 and then take the 4th ranked forward? Because that is just what they did now, took the #3 dman ranked by consensus 16 scouting services. Not even BPA. I truly believed OJ was a mistake at #5 but this might be not as good. OJ was so-so, Virtanen was early by a couple of spots consensus #8, Horvat was selected 6 spots early, this kid was 4th ranked dman

We all know you'd be bitching no matter who the Canucks drafted. If it was Bouchard or Dobson, you'd be moaning about taking size over skill; Boqvist would be concussion issues but they picked Hughes so it's "he's too small!" Krug and Spurgeon are 5'9", Karlsson and PK are 6'. I don't think being 5'10" is the death knell for Hughes' career.

VIC_CITY
Everything I've heard about this pick has been the complete opposite. Listening to him interview, he's very well spoken, he sounds confident and driven. There's no telling if we picked the 2nd best defenseman in the draft but Hughes is no Troy Stetcher. He has a MASSIVE offensive ceiling. Also, we still have 5 more picks. Benning will also be targeting players with size. Hughes fills a different need. We've literally gotten zero offense from our D over the last 3 or 4 years.

PuckFather
So Guardian, who did you want us to pick at 7th? Bouchard or Dobson? If they are that good, why did Chicago and Rangers pass on them?
