Getting eaten up a little bit on face-offs tonight (6/18) but he's lining up against a couple of 23-year-old seniors on Union's centre group tonight, so that's bound to happen. Madden didn't play the OT because Union scored 23 seconds in, before he even got a shift. It's unlikely he stays over a PPG, but if he finishes the year close to that then we would have another Gaudette type steal on our hands. Just a tough outing tonight (EDIT: on face-offs, otherwise he was great) because he was facing off against a couple 23-year-old seniors who took nearly all of the draws for Union. Oh yeah, sorry, I can see how that might’ve gotten confused. He’s actually impressed me quite a bit for an 18yo playing basically a first line centre role. Of course you’ll have nights when he’s trying to win draws against guys that are 5 years older, and much bigger/stronger than him, and it’s inevitable that he’ll struggle on the dot against those match ups. But for the most part, he’s been good and not looked out of place in these early games while playing a tough role for a freshman. He's playing top-6 minutes at 5v5, and playing both the PP and PK, and doing it as a centre. That's pretty unusual. You don't tend to see freshmen centering top lines and playing big minutes. And you don't tend to see them getting top unit power play time and also killing penalties. Not unless they're considered a marquee recruit, like maybe an NHL first round pick. And if a freshman natural C gets to play those kinds of minutes, he might get shifted to the wing, with an upperclassman slotting into the middle. But Madden is doing it all. Playing big minutes in all situations, and at what's considered the toughest forward position, especially for a young player who's still developing physically and doesn't have great size and strength. Not to mention he's doing it for the 12th ranked program in the NCAA (so it's not like he's playing on a crappy team). Impressive stuff. And the kid's putting up numbers. 3 goals and an assist in 3 games played. 4 shots on goal per game. Over 50% on draws.
