The Comets seem to play Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  Usually they play 3 games a week on average.  Also, they don't travel a ton either.

Northeastern's regular season: 34 games.

Comets' regular season: 76 games.

Northeastern's playoffs: up to 9 games.

Comets' playoffs: up to 26 games.

Total (maximum):

Northeastern: 43 games

Comets: 102 games

The NCAA offers far more training and rest time -- and far fewer guys who'll elbow you in the head and take you out for 20 games.  Gaudreau, who was drafted at 5'6", 137lbs, spent three seasons in college even though Calgary wanted him to turn pro after his sophomore year.  He went on to score 2 PPG as a junior and the extra time allowed him to be more NHL ready (he's now listed at 165lbs).

Even Boeser, who was already 191lbs at the draft and scored 60pts in 42 games as a freshman, stayed for a second year.  Madden is 150 lbs.  If he wants to play a gritty style in the NHL, he needs to add at least 30lbs.  For comparison, Baertsch is 5'11, 190lbs and he's not exactly a bulldozer out there.

Unless he blows the door off and runs away with the Hobey Baker next season, I think Madden would be better served to play three years in college like Gaudette.  John Madden didn't even start college hockey until he was 20 years old and played all four years, and he turned out just fine.

That’s true. But I think guys have an easier time really focusing in on their individual training when they stay at school. Making the pro jump brings a lot of adjustments and demands, so it’s a little tougher to work a training program, even if they have a similar playing schedule and days off.

EDIT: also, the collegiate schedule is maybe 40 games, including tournaments. AHL can be over double that, if you make playoffs.

LOL: didn’t see post above. Lays out my edit really well.

I don't disagree, but the AHL. Is a decent option for him.

No disagreement here.  I'm just saying if he wants to turn pro, the AHL is a good option as he gets pro games and a pretty good training/practice schedule.

The boys (Murphy, Shah and Auld) were raving about Madden during intermission (ANA), and it sounds like he'll be a very good player. Madden is a (small) C though and they've already got Pettersson, Horvat and Gaudette ahead of him on the depth chart. (not including Beagle and Sutter) And what if Benning drafts a C at the Draft? (Hughes, Dach, Turcotte, Zegras) Can Madden play wing?

He played wing in the U18 World Juniors this year and was one of the best players on the US team that won Silver. He was more noticeable than Jack Hughes in the tournament.

J. Hughes also missed the majority of the tournament with an injury and most likely played injured for the games he did play.

Pretty rare for a centre to have a hard time shifting to being a winger. Madden has the drive and offensive tools this team needs. 1 more year in the NCAA and then fighting for a spot in the NHL.

Love how Benning has been drafting high character guys. Love the way this team is shaping up going forward.

Interesting that they stopped at 37. I think Woo will be at least topping that 2nd round or even getting in the 1st round himself as Madden continues to climb.
