It is WAY too early to start judging Benning’s picks. Give him at least 5 years to have time to go through the system and sees what the NHL is like for a few years. These are kids, we forget this because of their incredible athletic ability that we look forward to whenever we watch a game. They take time to develop. Virtanen only just started showing real progress 4 years after he was picked and he was rushed. We can evaluate then the past few years draft pick choices. It’s fun to speculate, but none of us really knows what will happen until it happens. Remember the ceiling expectation of Bo? Or that hype up of Jordan Subban? None of us knows what happens in the future.

No offense intended personally but, are you nuts? 5 years to see if a draft pick can even play in the NHL? There are not enough contracts spots to wait that long. 5 years is in theory, 7 picks per year, 35 picks, 5 would be 1rst round selections. That also means that in 10 years the best from the start would/could be at the end of their careers, moved on through FA or content to be on a losing team because the team will be constantly rebuilding. How many draft picks do you think should be making he team after 5 years? One? Two? And how long/years in the NHL before seeing if they can play, there are many "star" AHLer's that can't crack line ups or even be part time players such as Motte, Lepsic, Vey, Larsson, Pouliot, you see problem.

If this management group is trading draft picks for other teams failures then they have given up on their own picks otherwise they would give them a shot.

If Edmonton is used as an example, well look at Vancouver because this team is far worse with a supposedly premium management group than Edmonton, they had other issues to deal with that the Canucks don't, money being a main problem and FA's desire to play there to the point where players asked to be traded away. Edmonton had 4 out of 5 of their first picks play meaningful minutes, Gagner, Eberle, RNH, Hall, 80%, Vancouver has one out of four, Boeser. 25%, Edmonton's 4 out of 5 don't appear to be hurt by playing early.

The ceiling on Bo? Can you compare how he would be on a good team? All it means right now is the talent level is so low on this bottom of the league team that a very good 2nd line player is considered equal to Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin, Hall, ….. by fans like yourself that seem to ignore comparison's to the good teams in the league.

IMO they should let Virtanen find his game and stop forcing the issue via punishment of benching and then media discussions of his weaknesses, the kid is fast, has a very hard if not hugely accurate NHL wrist shot, does hit but doesn't and shouldn't need to hit every shift and should not be expected to duke it out, that is what the "energy" guys and 4th liners are for, even dmen should not be too involved in "corrections" as they will be sat out 5+ minutes.
