Phat Fingers
Not a big thread starter, but now that the draft is over, time to buckle up for the FA frenzy. The team has a boatload or cap space and a enviable prospect pool, but we are still likely lotto bound next year. The FA pool is shallow this year and the team needs a center, a tough guy and a top pairing defender. For all the confidence of Quinn, he is not likely to play next season. OJ will also need time to adjust to the NHL. Our defence was pitiful last year and even with Quinn, OJ, Woo and Trymakin pending in the wings, we can afford to invest in this position. Carlson is after big money. Why not, lead the league in points as a d man, was key in the Caps cup win, 27 at the peak of his game. Plays a rugged tough game while staying healthy. Adding Carlson without giving up assets takes the pressure off Edler, making him more effective, it should lessen the demand on Tanev making him more effective and Guddy won’t have to be the only tough guy. We have ave two movable contracts in MDZ and Hutton that could be moved to pay for Carlson. Added to that, a Hughes Carlson pairing would be deadly in two years. No no one would be messing with Hughes if Carlson was on his right side. With Carlson this year we have a much improved d corps. In the next few years, with OJ, Woo Trymakin and Hughes along with Carlson and Guddy, we have a d corps that is a contending level d corps. Great blend of size and skill, mobility and toughness. Ever lairinf capable of taking on tough assignments and three of the players on entry level deals. So affordable. Signing Carlson makes sense, we have the cap space and we desperately need to address our d woes. Bringing OJ, Woo and Hughes into this current structure without a player like Carlson could be a disaster.

Twilight Sparkle
carlson is worth as much as kempny will be when it's time. that's the caps top priority is getting those guys signed at the same deal, and after you win a championship, why wouldn't you re-sign for another shot. i don't see carlson signing long term, and even if he does, he'll have a list of teams he'll want to be traded to. i wouldn't say carlson was the sole reason why the caps won the cup, cause, man that entire team was carried by ovechkin, when you break it all down. the guy lead lead by example and everyone followed suit. who's to say he signs big money somewhere else and bombs. it would be best to sign on another year to see how the team does and have him showcase what he can really do

Pretty sure the caps just cleared room to sign Carlson as well, trading Orpik and Grubauer they did. The only issue I suppose is how big a deal losing Trotz is to Carlson but WSH has made the cap room needed to keep him. If he does move I think he stays on the east coast. PlanB
JC will presumably want huge dollars, lengthy term, and full NTC/NMC. And like so many other UFA's in his situation - likely will be incapable of playing up to the level of compensation of the next contract he signs by the time it's halfway expired; which, by the way, is about when we're supposed to become seriously competitive with our next core of players. I for one don't want an untradeable contract hanging over this team when we're about to be competitive. Pass.
Jaku
Washington just cleared cap for him and it's been reported that they're close in negotiations. I doubt he makes it to free agency.

I wouldn't mind Orpik on a short-term deal here to provide leadership and physicality on the back end. Gudbranson shouldn't be our only defenseman with a mean streak. If Hughes is the player being hyped and possible ready for next season. Are we better off next year with a Hughes Karlsson pairing next year vs a Hughes Carlson pairing? Carlson is more durable, plays a much more physical game while Karlsson and Hughes both play the same type of rover game. Karlsson is a more proven points producer, Carlson is no slouch in that department either. Plus, as we are a less desirable team to sign with and the bump in Carlson’s profile in one season, other teams will be more Leary of matching contracts with us. Especially with EK and Doughty possibly hitting the market next year. Added to that if Carlson is asking 8-9 mil, how much would it cost to add Karlsson next season. IMO with Hughes as our pick, a player that can play a more physical role is needed. Carlson can also contribute on the score sheet. He could be Seabrook to Hughes’s Keith.
