2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC

With all the discussion about this kid and all the people saying he's a 'no-brainer' at #10, I have to re-post this comment I made from about 2 months ago.  Having watched Newhook live last season and this season (at home, on the road, regular season and playoffs) I have to say I was impressed with his skill-set but VERY unimpressed with the 'intangibles' that so often set apart the players with skill and the players who 'make a difference' for your team night-in-night-out unfortunately.  I'm not saying he's an absolute 'no' at the draft, but I would presume JB and co would be doing their full due-diligence on this kid because there are a few question marks about him by my own observations admittedly.

I don't see newhook going any earlier than #15........there's too many good fwds ahead of him

Totally agree.  He might become a very good NHL player, but (like you point out) there are just too many guys who have higher ceilings and higher floors than Newhook.  Plus, there is the problem with Newhook playing his draft eligible year in such a lesser league from so many of the other guys.

If Podkolzin is there at 10 should we take him, or Newhook?  I know you think Newhook will go at ten, but isn’t Podkolzin better?

I go Podk over Newhook every single time until Podk says hes not coming over.

If course not but kid has near highest end skill in entire draft

Sign me up. A year in the K is nothing to whine about either.

Podk, Zeg, or Boldy for me.

Absolutely. In my eyes there really isn’t any comparison. An extra year to develop in the K and then comes over and slides into a top 6 role for the season opener in 2020.

Podman would be the ideal winger for Petey and Bess.  Guy has skills, grit, and a grinder style that fits well with the other two. Plus, Podman is a high compete player, who wants to win.  I hope we take him if he falls to 10.  Plus, Willie (I hate Russian players) Desjardins is long gone.  Thank God.

This is a non-factor imo.  The quality of competition is less of a factor these days since scouting takes place over a long-period of time (years in some cases) and scouts look at each player in their own league as well as competition of age-group tournaments/exhibition games.  Makar proved recently that JrA is a good place to develop as a prospect and it didn't hurt his ranking whatsoever.

The other concerns although, as I pointed out earlier, they still carry over regardless of the league/competition faced imo.

I’ll say

NJD - Hughes

NYR - Kakko

CHI - Turcotte

COL - Byram

LA - Cozens

DET - Podkolzin

BUF - Caufield

EDM - Broberg

ANA - Dach

VAN - Zegras

Perfect scenario for us imo. Get to choose from Zegras, Krebs, Newhook, and Boldy.

Or Soderstrom/Seider/Harley/Heinola

If the draft falls as you foresee, could JB choose the young German D man - Seider - instead of one of the forwards you listed?

Possibly. But I don’t see how he could with those other guys still available.

Halifax wanted him bad and put a lot of pressure on him to play for them. Had he done that he would have missed the opportunity to play American college hockey which clearly was a dream of his. Boston University will be an amazing opportunity for him and give him a chance to make life lasting contacts. He must have been warned in advance that playing jr. A could affect his draft chances and even after hearing that he was so confident in his abilities that he chooses to stick it out in Victoria, and then go on to play for Boston U. He will be joining a stacked team with other first rounders like Mathew Boldy and Spencer Knight. On top of all that he gets a world class education. I think he made a really awesome choice by going to college and give him credit for doing it his way. I feel comfortable that he will sign with Vancouver if we draft him because he has made it clear he loves Victoria and BC. College hockey will get his game to where it needs to be. Only the best of the best succeed and I think he has what it takes.

Definitely not. Especially with Zegras still on the board.

I think you’re pretty close. Although I believe Colorado goes with either Cozens or Dach and then LA takes Byram. I’d love to see Boldy or Zegras sitting there at 10.

Love of this region is certainly a bonus to have in a player.  That should raise the compete level.  There is always the concern that a college player will need four full years of college to develop.  I wonder if he's a guy that will be ready sooner?

When I watch Alex Newhook highlights he almost reminds me of Q.Hughes as a forward buzzing around other players with the puck, making hockey plays, and making things hard on the other team. He has a left shot and I would love to see him used on a line with Pettersson and Boeser. His speed to get the puck down the ice and make a play to Boeser for the one timer would be awesome to watch. As well as letting Q.Hughes skate the puck up ice and have Newhook skating around to get open doing circles around the other teams defence would be really hard to check and make more room for Boeser and Pettersson to get the puck. The thought of those 4 working tother gives me goosebumps. If we had a young, physical, defensively minded, right shot defence man with a cannon of a shot to play with Quinn that would form a really solid line. Maybe Jet Woo?? or maybe someone we draft with our first next year??

Edit: maybe a good defence man who falls to our second round pick this year??

Newhook Pettersson Boeser

     Q.Hughes Woo

i like that look. now if only they could put a 2nd line together of horvat, pearson and zucker, we’ld be trending up. with juolevi and stecher.

OJ and Stecher could be an awesome pair.  I like that Joe.

I think Colorado goes for a 2C too, but I can’t see them passing an opportunity to take Byram

He is almost guaranteed to be in the KHL for 2. Apparently it's easier to get kids out of their KHL contracts but even so it's best to expect him to stay the two years. And even that isn't bad. Most kids, especially drafted outside the top 3-5 need a couple years of maturing time. He is considered one of the more NHL ready prospects by a few scouts, from the scouting reports I read anyway. So he could very well pop up in a year if what is said about kid's KHL contracts is true. Either way nobody we draft at 10 will be in the NHL this season and very likely will not be NHL ready next season either. So the two year KHL deal is moot all things considered. If Pod is there at 10 the only players I'd pass on him for are Hughes, Kakko, Byram, Turcotte and Cozens (Dach is a toss up). 3 of those 5 will be long gone by 10, and personally I think Pod will be gone too.

With his play at the U18 i think newhook has vaulted himself into the 9 - 15 group/area. Id be surprised if hes still on the board much longer than 15.
