[Waivers] Alex Burrows

Recommended Posts

I will come out and say in the playoffs Burrows was a relatively better player than Naslund.

Naslund was terrible in the playoffs, I always got so frustrated watching him float around in the Neutral zone, rarely even entering the O-zone.

He had one decent playoff year, never made it past second round and just generally pissed me off every year.

Burrows PPG goes up in the playoffs, Naslunds drops down.

But Naslund was a much better player overall, just didn't have what it takes in the playoffs.

I think it’s pretty clear after all of the debate this has sparked: Take Naslund’s 19 down from the rafters.

I liked Naslund as a player. Was real good. I never agreed with retiring his number though.

I've never said this about a former player at the twilight of his career but I'd take him back.

Use him as the 13th forward. The guy is heart and soul.

If that doesn't work, he can replace Fin.

Im totally down with the fin situation. Can picture it now...fin doing the bow and arrow!

I won't get in to it with the Naslund fans. Maybe some are to young to remember how bad the club was before he and Kesler got to Van. No, Alex Burrows did not put up the points that Naslund did. But as you pointed out Naslund and Bert were brutal in the defensive side of center. There is certainly more to being a good hockey player than goal scoring. Burrows got the job done at both ends of the ice and ya he scored more than a few pretty goals. Never saw Naslund PK once in his career.

IMHO it is all about winning the big games and creating a culture on a team that makes team mates better. Burrows was better at that than Naslund.

I assume you meant Bertuzzi there other than that mostly agree with you.

In the regular season they were elite Offensive players but not great complete players.  Luckily Morrison covered them a lot.  I think when you have elite offensive guys, you can take the defensive lapses to a certain degree.  I had the same problem with Jovo, good offensively but terrible defensively.  He threw some hits and often ran around out of position to do that and people would chalk that up as good defense.

I thought the WCE teams were over-rated but man they were fun.

Do you remember the club before Naslund took over captaincy from Messier? The team was in a way, way worse state then when the time Burrows and Kesler arrived on the scene. In matter of fact, there probably wouldn't be a Burrows slaying the dragon moment, if it weren't for Naslund putting fans back into the seats at Rogers (GM Place) in the late 90s-early 2000s.
