[Signing] Flames sign Neal [5 years x $ 5.75m]

Recommended Posts

Per Sportsnet. Neal is turning 31 in September. Decent money but another Eriksson / Lucic / Brouwer contract in my view.

Going to enjoy watching the Flames struggle with his contract in 3 years :goat:

Actually Neal's proven himself to be able to succeed on 3 different teams. And he kickstarted Vegas' last year success quite a bit. I think this is a great signing by the flames to add offense to their already solid lineup.

Agreed with Standing Tall. He'll be great for the first two years but I am sure he won't be worth the 5.75 after that.

I thought Neal would have gotten paid more on the UFA market, so cost doesn’t seem bad..term on the other hand is a bit much but I’m sure he had other offers.

Flames are stacked on LW, still lacking a RW and goalie.

Neal is a RW and Peters says he plans to use Lindholm at RW.

I thought Neal wa LW, works if he’s RW.

Peters also said he planned to use Tkachuk as RW on the number 1 line after he made the Lindholm comment.

Solid reliable scorer, and believe it or not, as bad as our scoring was we actually scored 2 more goals last year than the Flames.

Their top-6 looks very solid, but they still have work to do on forward depth and so far have only added the two smurfs from yesterday.  Will the contract become an anchor at some point?  Time will tell -- he doesn't turn 31 until September so he'll be 35 when it's done.

Vegas apparently offered Neal 5x 5M.  No state income tax in Vegas - probably higher net income although lower cap hit vs the Calgary deal.

Yeah not sure why he'd jump teams again, especially to leave Vegas for Calgary.  That being said, this probably ensures that Vegas takes a significant step back this year -- not so bad for us either, as we didn't run with them very well.

Well blow me down.....a positive post from Drakrami ! Oh, wait, it's not about the Canucks ! Your place on the Negative Ninja club is safe.

Not a terrible signing.  Consistency helps and Neal has that, 25ish goals are his normal range these days, and he's a bit of a power forward too which gives them some added toughness.   Surprised he didn't stay in Vegas though, 5 million there is about the same as 5.75 in Calgary (although they have the best taxes after Nevada and FLorida league wide so it might be close either way).

Word was that he was headed back to Vegas, but clearly the Flames stepped in and outbid for him.  So that begs the question...

"Did the Flames overpay in salary and term, because they are a crappy undesirable team to go to and can't control themselves?", like a certain other team some continually make the same accusation against?

One has to wonder why players are so easily pried away from the finalists Knights. They have the cap room to outbid and perhaps they didn't want to set a precedent, but they did sign Reaves for almost 3 million.

I guess they're really banking on Tatar to be successful and feel Perron and Neal won't be big losses to them.

And now it's time to re-examine the Flames' cap situation.  $12.8million available, sitting at 18/23 contracts with the following key RFAs to be signed:

Lindholm

Hanifin

Jankowski

Jankowski will get a raise from his ELC, but the first two will likely take the better part of $10million.  They also need a backup goalie.  The most obvious course of action would be trying to dump the last two years of Brouwer's $4.5mil, unless they plan to move Bennett for nothing but picks and/or prospects but things would still be tight.  Brodie's another possibility, but the expectation is they reunite him with Giordano on the first pairing.  Stone has 2 years left at $3.5mil.

I am with you on that. He is pretty much proven he is worth almost exactly this amount and the term is like any over 30 player: just long enough that the team can use every drop of his ability and just short enough that they aren't in any trouble. For example the cap went up almost his full contract value. In cap dollars last month he costs the flames 2 million, roughly. haha. Next year's cap increase will wipe out the that two and any issues in year five will be worth it for the best available LW this morning. Price of doing business.
