Roughly 21,000 fish were inside the pen at the Robertson Island farm near Port Hardy when the fire broke out sometime overnight between Thursday and Friday, Mowi Canada West said in a statement. The company said late Saturday that "most" of those salmon have escaped the circular pen, which sits with several others in the waters of the Queen Charlotte Strait. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Mowi said the pen will be towed to land for an investigation after the remaining fish are removed. Farmed Atlantic Salmon taste like dog s..... Gurn
Small oil spill in the Galapagos Islands: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/news/world/barge-with-600-gallons-of-diesel-sinks-off-galápagos-islands/ar-BBYhpzd?ocid=spartandhp " Hundreds of gallons of diesel fuel sank into the waters off the Galápagos Islands on Sunday after a crane toppled onto a barge and caused it to overturn, the authorities in Ecuador said, prompting an emergency cleanup in one of the most revered natural destinations in the world. The authorities said that 600 gallons were on the barge when it sank off San Cristóbal Island, threatening the nearby environment. They declared an emergency and said they had ordered an investigation into the episode. Advertisement It was not immediately clear how much fuel had leaked out of the ship, but photos posted on Twitter on Sunday by Ecuador’s Ministry of the Environment showed officials with the Galápagos National Park and the country’s Coast Guard on boats racing to contain the spill. Sign up for the Morning Briefing Newsletter On Monday, Lenín Moreno, the president of Ecuador, said on Twitter that the spill was under control. Dramatic video of the crane collapse shows workers trying to load a shipping container onto what appears to be a relatively small vessel called the Orca. As the crane hoists the container over the ship, the container comes crashing down onto the Orca, pulling the crane with it. The crane tumbles over the Orca and into the water, and the ship flips onto its side as people on board dive into the water. It was not immediately clear if anyone had been injured in the episode or how significant the environmental damage was. Government officials said in a statement on Sunday that emergency responders had placed hydrocarbon materials and containment barriers around the Orca to prevent leaks from the vessel. The Galápagos Islands, which are about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, are known for their role in inspiring Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution after he visited there in 1835. The islands have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. Their scenery and unique wildlife — including marine iguanas, flightless cormorants and giant tortoises — have made them increasingly popular with tourists, though scientists have warned that more visitors could threaten the area’s fragile ecosystem. Warming oceans increasingly threaten the islands. UNESCO has warned that they are one of the places most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Sunday’s accident paled in comparison to a spill in the islands in 2001, when a tanker slammed into a reef off San Cristóbal Island and poured 150,000 gallons of diesel and bunker fuel into the water. While winds sent much of the slick out to sea, sparing some Galápagos wildlife, scientists found that the population of marine iguanas on one island, Santa Fe, declined to 10,000 from 25,000 in the wake of the disaster." I have an old work buddy in Adelaide I haven't talked to in years. I should reach out to see how he is. You raise a fair question, though. Edit: he, family and friends are fine. RUPERTKBD
https://www.foxnews.com/world/canada-snowboarders-lost-backcountry-burned-homework-survival-rescue Quote Two teenage snowboarders rescued Monday from the Candian backcountry had burned their homework to stay warm through the night after getting lost in poor weather conditions, officials said. The boys, both aged 16, failed to return from their Sunday snowboarding outing at the Whitewater Ski Resort near Nelson in southern British Columbia, Nelson Search and Rescue said in a news release. A 10-member ground team patrolled the roads overnight, but their efforts to attract the teens to safety by shining lights were unsuccessful, the release said. A helicopter was dispatched on Monday morning to help ground teams in the search along the backcountry. Rescuers found the boys at 8:45 a.m. in the Qua Valley, just south of the resort, and flew them to safety. Jim Kyle, manager of Nelson Search and Rescue, told the CBC that the boys were “extremely lucky” that the snowy weather conditions let up long enough to allow the use of a helicopter. He added the lost teens “did all the right things" until they could be rescued, one of which was to build a fire to stay warm. "One young person had homework in his backpack and that definitely helped keep the fire going," Kyle said. Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey, Royal Candian Mounted Police Southeast District Media Relations Officer, shared details on the boys’ overnight survival against the elements with The Nelson Daily. "We are told that the pair had the wherewithal to construct a shelter and build a fire for warmth, and more importantly stay put and wait for help," O’Donaghey said. Both boys appeared in good health at the time of the rescue Monday morning, according to officials. The lengths some kids will go to, just to get out of doing homework....

nuckin_futz
Facebook blames 'technical issue' for offensive Xi Jinping translation Facebook has apologised for translating Chinese President Xi Jinping's name from Burmese to English into an obscenity on its platform. The translation gaffe came to light on the second day of Mr Xi's state visit to Myanmar. On Saturday, Mr Xi met Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi to enhance bilateral relations. In Burmese Facebook posts about their meeting, Mr Xi's name in English was translated erroneously. His name appeared as "Mr $&!#hole" in Facebook posts shared on the official accounts of Ms Suu Kyi and her office. Facebook addressed the mishap in a statement on Saturday, blaming a "technical issue" for the mistranslation. "We fixed a technical issue that caused incorrect translations from Burmese to English on Facebook," said Andy Stone, a spokesman for Facebook. "This should not have happened and we are taking steps to ensure it doesn't happen again." Burmese is the official language in Myanmar, where it is spoken by two-thirds of the population. Facebook admitted that Mr Xi's name had not been inputted into the database that translates Burmese into English. In instances where data for a word is missing, Facebook's system guesses the translation, using similar syllables to replace it, the company said. Translation tests of similar words that start with "xi" and "shi" in Burmese also produced "$&!#hole", it added. "We are aware of an issue regarding Burmese to English translations on Facebook, and we're doing everything we can to fix this as quickly as possible," Mr Stone added in the statement. As of Sunday morning, the English translation function did not appear to be working on the Burmese posts of official Facebook pages belonging to Ms Suu Kyi and the Myanmar government. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-51166339 Edited January 19, 2020 by nuckin_futz
