Women on Arctic research mission told not to wear tight-fitting clothing

"We were told there are a lot of men on board this ship … and some of them are going to be on board this ship for months at a time," Harvey told CBC News. "In my meeting … what we were told was this was a 'safety issue.'

Dichotomy 101

Today we are addressing the issue of telling western women how to dress at work or the like.

Yesterday, we promoted the West’s tolerance of gender-specific dress codes of other cultures.

Is it possible for our western society to embrace both dichotomous values?

Ahh cultures, that old nut.

I dunno man, too much nonsense with attire. I am usually not a agreed with but..

Imo you show your face at a citizenship test. You wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle, even if is a giant one to fit over a turban. Church and state should be separate, as should church be separated when safety is a concern.

Also, If women can go sleeveless in parliament, why can't men?

These boys were making a point...

I don't have any boys, but if I did, I'd be proud of them for doing that.

Also, I'd have a four letter word with that Principal....

Right?

Lots of irony in virtue signalling on tolerance concerning decorum of dress.

Bad news for my friends @CBH1926 and @skolozsy2......Chicago is officially the "rattiest" city in America:

https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/17/us/chicago-rat-city-2020-trnd/index.html

Chicago is the six-time holder of a title that no city wants.

The Windy City has topped the list of the rattiest cities in the United States for the sixth year in a row.
Orkin, an Atlanta-based pest control service, ranks US cities based on the number of new rodent treatments from September 1 to August 31 of each year. The result is a list of 50 cities, with most changing spots each time the list is updated. Chicago, however, is still No. 1.
"Rodents are experts at sniffing out food and shelter, and they're resilient in their ways to obtain both," Ben Hottel, an Orkin entomologist, said in the company's press release. "Residential properties offer the ideal habitat for rodents, and once they've settled in, they're capable of reproducing rapidly and in large quantities."
Efforts to tame the city's rat population have been going on for years. Chicago's "war on rats" escalated with the introduction of a new rat task force back in 2016. Residents had even begun adopting cats to squash their numbers.

Bear in mind folks, that this report takes into account the fact that Brad Marchand still lives in Boston.....

We're a very "animal friendly" city.

Those numbers could have actually been twice as high if they included our politicians too.

Demonstrators across France rally in tribute to beheaded teacher

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/france-beheading-teacher-tribute-rallies-1.5767284

France's prime minister joined demonstrators on Sunday who rallied together across the country in tribute to a history teacher who was beheaded near Paris after discussing caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad with his class.

I missed this story.

Just awful.

I don't know how anyone can believe a caricature of a sky fairy should carry the punishment of murder... so frickin sad.

Off on a bit of a tangent, but this story (or rather Bishop's reaction to it) reminds me of a classic WKRP episode.....

In this particular episode, one of the station's major sponsors (some sort of religious institution) threatens to boycott the station because they have John Lennon's "Imagine" in their rotation. The thing they object to is the line "Imagine there's no heaven"....completely missing the actual point of the song....

When you look at all the despicable acts that are carried out in the name of religion, it's hard not to conclude that Lennon was definitely onto something....

Funny story about Brian Burke, Pat Quinn and Don Koharski. Couldn't find a good spot for this in CT or General Hockey Discussion and I didn't think it deserved it's own thread, so I'm parking it here:

Quote

One of the better stories in yours is with the Canucks, when you put yourself between Pat Quinn and Don Koharski..

Pat hated referees, and he hated Koho most of all. They had a beef in the American League when Pat was coaching there. One night, we’re walking right by the officials’ room on our way down to the coach's room in the old Pacific Coliseum. I'm standing on the right, Pat's on the left, and the officials’ room is to my right. So I'm in between Pat and the door. Pat stopped. So, I’m like, “What are you doing?” He said, “I'm going in there to take a piece outta Koho.” I said, “No, you are not. The league will suspend ya and fine ya. We’re losing money, and we can't afford the fine, and you don't need this.” And he said, “Get out of my way. Or in 30 seconds, you'll be a bleeping corpse.” And I said, “Pat, you can hit me.” And he started to shake.

People don't realize, Pat had a long fuse. Pat didn't lose his temper easily. But when he did, he would start shaking, he’d get so mad. And he was shaking. I thought, 'He's gonna hit me. And I'm gonna wake up in a week.' But I said, “Pat, you can hit me if you want, but you're not going in there.” I wouldn't move. He waited about 30 seconds trying to decide. He was turning it over in his mind: Should I hit him and go in or not? He finally turned, swore at me, and walked away. Half hour later, he was still shaking.

It's an excerpt from a two part interview with Burkie on Sportsnet.ca. Some great stories:
