WOW. Please be in on this Benning. A top pairing of Hughes + Karlsson would be amazing. Offer to take on Bobby Ryan's horrid contract in order to lessen the amount going back to Ottawa for the trade

Where would we get the $18M to $20M cap space to make this move?

Vancouver is not in on this now nor would they ever be and rightfully so.

Any discussion with Ottawa does not include eating Ryans contract so much as it starts with Boeser and Petterson as well as next years 1st round pick.

Let someone else overpay

Move out Sutter for picks (he does have value across the league, despite what people think), and pair a prospect like Dahlen with Eriksson to clear cap, thats 11 million right there, which covers what Karlsson would likely command, we have 12 million in cap space right now with Edler, Del Zotto coming off the books next year freeing up an additional 8M.

Next year Boeser is the only big ticket RFA we have to resign, so Edler and Del Zotto cap covers that, still leaving us with more cap space. Pettersson won't cost us until 3 years from now, by then Ryan will either be taken by Seattle in expansion or be here still on the last year of his deal. Who knows what the roster and/or cap increase is 3 years from now?

Point is, there's ways for Benning to climb out of the hole he dug himself with Sutter and Eriksson AND land Karlsson at the same time. Who knows, maybe Ryan rekindles some of his former glory and actually becomes worth a damn.

I wouldn't call Sutter a hole.

The UFA's though, are holes.

That's what so stupid. They want to include Ryan. How many teams have 18 to 20 million in cap space. Sheesh Melnyk. Put the jaws of life on your wallet and leave Ryan out of it. Maximize the return on one of the worlds best dmen!

Not really, Karlsson pretty much has killed any significant value Ottawa would get in a trade. They have zero leverage, and he holds all the power. Ottawa at this point will be lucky to get any kind of value back for Karlsson. If they veto a trade that Karlsson wants, he shuts it down and they get nothing for him after he walks as a UFA.

In this scenario, it's worth it for us to be able to get Karlsson locked in on our top pairing. The cap can work and it would almost immediately put us back into playoff contention THIS YEAR, not considering what kind of year Pettersson and Gaudette and potentially Hughes may have.

Ian Cole back as goaltender coach almost assures better goaltending than what we got last year out of Markstrom and Nilsson

Actually I disagree.  Value will be determined by how many teams want his services.  If only one team is interested then his value will be much less; I doubt that is the case

Good luck with that. But hey, last time we gave them Burrows and got Dahlen. Second time, still lucky?

I honestly don't know how the Canucks pull this off and come out ahead, I don't mean fleecing the Senators, just the bid that will need to be competitive enough to compete with what other teams can offer will only be a lateral move I imagine.

A shrewd enough move by the Senators GM as an extended Karlsson now returns more than at the deadline I imagine. Suck to be a Sens fan though.
