Orgs like the IOC and FIFA are money hungry and corrupt. If they want to profit off of NHL talent they should share the reward with the NHL owners, else they can use amateur talent. Afterall, the Olympics are supposed to be for amateur athletes anyway.

the NHL  is all about money as well , best on best format the players want to play , no pay and their fine with that ,bettman doesn't want lost gate revenue, understandable .ioc iihf doesn't  want to compromise , share , no game video replay highlites allowed ? how does this promote the game from an ioc, iihf perspective? hopefully they throw down some money , thats the only thing bettman understands.

Agreed 100% that IOC &FIFA are thoroughly corrupted.   But would add that if you share with with NHL owners then you share with players too.   They're risking their careers by going there for what exactly - the nation's gratitude?

Maybe originally, but almost every sport has a pro tour now, and has for a long time.  I bet there are more professionals than amateurs at the Olympics..

Besides, the Stanley Cup was originally for the top amateur team as well.  Times have changed.

The owners are the ones at risk in all of this of losing their star talent as they gear into the final month and a half of a playoff race.  Look what happened when Tavares broke his leg and the Islanders missed the playoffs because of it.  Why would you ever do that for nothing knowing the other guys (IOC) are making a killing off of it?  Split the profits and go from there.  At least make it worth the business owners time.  Called compromise.

The owners get massive, worldwide publicity when they send/allow NHL players to go to the Olympics, so they aren't doing it for nothing. Increased merchandise sales are practically guaranteed.

Well clearly they think otherwise.... Or maybe you are smarter than the 31 owners....

Or maybe I'm a better long term thinker.

Say do you think the owners will have players available for the Oly's in China? You know, the most populated country in the world?

Or maybe you give yourself too much credit

The owners will do what they think is best for them. There are other ways to grow the game in China...like you know....playing actual NHL games over there

Or maybe you don't give me enough.

Check out the ratings of any NHL hockey game including cup finals and compare it to the Winter Olympics.

And when did the NHL play an actual NHL game over there?
