I thought the answer to gun violence was having trained good guys with guns to take care of it?  Guess not.

You have to be prepared and until the entire population has tanks and RPGs etc.. it is just not fair.. How can people defend against the impending army invasion on behalf of govt (not Trump MAGA) without the same weapons they have? WTF the 2nd amendment is being severely violated imo!!!

As an American citizen, if I want to own a WW2 era Soviet T34, then that is my right. It is also the mechanized weapon of choice of our great supreme leader and Kommissar, Vladimir Putin. The government has no right to tread on my right of driving my T34 to the coal mines and the liquor store. DON'T TREAD ON ME. And certainly don't read to me because I won't understand all them big words you are sayin.

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF/AP/NBC News contributed to this report) —

Authorities have released new details about the suspect in the shooting that killed one Florence officer and injured six others and why officers were at the home where the shooting happened.

Florence County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Glenn Kirby said the suspect in the shooting is 74-year-old Fred Hopkins. He said authorities have not be able to speak with Hopkins because of multiple health issues, including a head injury. WPDE reports Hopkins fell at the scene.

Kirby said authorities were serving a search warrant about 4 p.m. Wednesday in Vintage Place for a 27-year-old suspect in a sexual assault case of a minor. He said the minor was a foster child. Reports said someone at the home was holding children hostage.

Kirby said the suspect was shot, but no other details about who shot him or his condition have been released.

A tweet from Florence County Emergency Management Wednesday evening said that “Due to a high priority call in Vintage Place off of Hoffmeyer Rd in Florence. There is an active shooter incident in progress at this time. We are advising everyone to stay away from this area. We have FCSO along with City PD and other first responders handling this situation.”

Sheriff Kenney Boone said during a press conference, "Fire was being shot all over. The way the suspect was positioned, his view of fire was several hundred yards. So he had an advantage and the officers couldn't get to the ones that was down."

Three of the people shot were deputies from the Florence County Sheriff’s Office and four were officers from the Florence Police Department.

City of Florence spokesman John Wukela told the Associated Press that Officer Terrence Carraway was the officer who died.

Wukela says Carraway had just celebrated 30 years as a police officer in the city.

NBC News reports three of the injured deputies are in critical condition and one, who was shot in the leg, is in stable condition. The report said another deputy was paralyzed from a graze wound to the head, another was in stable condition and a third was shot in the thumb was released from the hospital.

“These officers went there unknowing the firepower the suspect had, and they thought it was a random search warrant,” Florence County Sheriff Kenney Boone said during a Wednesday evening press conference that was wrought with emotion.

An emotional Florence Police Chief Allen Heidler asked that the community lift the law enforcement agencies up in their prayers.

“Today we lost a good friend of mine, an officer that I’ve known for 30 years,” Heidler said regarding the officer who died from injuries suffered in the shooting.

Mayor Stephen Wukela's office released a statement:

"City of Florence Police Department responded to an incident in support of Florence County Sheriff’s Deputies. They took fire and several officers were wounded, some seriously. The incident has now concluded with the suspect in custody. Mayor Wukela will issue a statement at a later point."

Wow. This white guy KILLED a cop and shot at 4 others, and they negotiated his arrest. Yet people of color cough in front of a cop and get shot.

Well said. Yet there are still people (and some on this forum) who will tell you that racism on the part of law enforcement doesn't exist.

Now could this have been why the negotiated?  I see it says reports but if there were children hostage then maybe its for the best?  Either way to bad they didn't just shoot the bugger and been done with it.

Two people were killed and two others were injured when multiple gunshots were fired at a shopping center in Fort Myers, Florida, on Tuesday night, authorities said.

"It does not appear to be a random act of violence," Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno said late Tuesday. He gave no further information.

None of the victims was identified, and the condition of the wounded wasn't immediately available.

NBC affiliate WBBH quoted a woman at the scene who said she was celebrating her birthday inside the restaurant Society at Bell Tower Shops when someone shot her husband in the chest as she was paying her bill. She told the station that the shooter then shot and killed her son as he tried to run away.

Nestor Montoya, a reporter for the station, posted a photo on Twitter showing numerous emergency vehicles gathered in the complex's parking lot, saying multiple shots were heard.

A witness told the News-Press newspaper that he heard at least 10 shots and that he and other patrons were locked inside a restaurant at the scene
