Quote

MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today that Tomas Plekanec will be placed on unconditional waivers at 12 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, for the purpose of terminating his contract.

Tomas Plekanec has played a total of 1,001 career regular season games in the NHL, including 984 games in a Canadiens uniform. The Kladno, Czech Republic native has 608 career points (233 goals, 375 assists). Plekanec also played in 94 career playoff games, and registered 53 points (18 goals, 35 assists).

On October 15, Plekanec suited up for his 1,000th NHL game against the Detroit Red Wings, scoring his lone goal of the season.

Tomas Plekanec was selected in the third round by the Canadiens (71st overall) at the 2001 NHL Draft. He had been acting as an assistant captain from the 2010-11 season through the 2017-18 campaign.

he's still a solid face off guy. He'll still be valuable somewhere.

I can kind of see him as a fill in your lighten the load on Bo. I don't know if messing with the team chemistry is the right move tho lol

They had no plan to actually use him this year. Signed him as a favor (and for the PR) so he could get his 1000th game. Gave him his special night. Then he retires with a nice little cash package, a nod and a wink. I am sure he was involved in that decision when he signed.

It wasn't a coincidence that he got "injured" after his 1000th. Just in time to gracefully exit to IR so a younger player wouldn't have to go through waivers.

He was plan B, if Kotkaniemi wasn't ready, and/or Domi couldn't play C.

Now with them both playing C (and very well at that), and Plekanec looking older than ever, he's bowing out gracefully. Habs treated him right after dealing him at last deadline.

We’re hurtin’ down the middle. Pick him up. If you need more incentive than that, it’ll be a nice little middle finger to Gags. :bigblush:

He’s already filed his retirement papers.  The rumour is he wants to finish his playing career out at home playing with Jagr
