I'm going two thumbs up on the Antoine Roussel signing

I was thinking of Dorsett too, he was a bit more willing to drop them heart of a lion and instantly stood up for teammates, Rousell a little more hesitant to fight (both aren’t that good at it either which they have in common) but is an agitator too, both bring some offense and will hit.   Sad to see Dorsett retire, he was on fire at the end too, both earn they pay cheque’s.   Agree with the OP that come playoff time he will garner interest too, as long as his skating stays up (which it should), the last two TDLs there would be takers.

I had forgotten about Dorsett.  For the money, he was something.  He was the Burr 2.0.

Roussel not in Dorsett's class yet: too many minor penalties that kill momentum and detract from budding team identity (which is that of an offensive counter-attack team built around pinching D and creative 1st and 2nd line centers driving play.)  I don't see Roussel standing up for linemates, unlike Dorsett and even the ill-fated Prust.  Prust is now playing in Europe, I see Roussel doing the same along with Gagner, Eriksson, etc., sometime in 2021, perhaps earlier, depends on how well Lind, Dahlen and Gadjovich adapt to pro hockey.

thats a bit surprising to me, he seemed to me like he'd be able to deliver on a style of play that didn't rely on production. Maybe he just didn't get into shape properly due to his surgery, but something is off.

Love Beagle and Rousell tho, they bring a lot of character to the team. What nice is Bo hasn't been overshadowed one bit, if anything he's emerging even more as the natural leader of the team.

I agree. A friend of mine is a huge bruins fan and gave us props for that signing. I feel like he’s trying to create offensively too much rather than bringing the grit and fighting factor we’re in need of and as far as I know, what he’s known for. Ah well. I’m not too upset about it, some players take time to find their fit with new teams.

Agree about Bo... they showed a graphic during the game last night showing his PPG since his rookie season and he’s continually jumped every year... I believe he’s at .87 so far this season. Pretty incredible, considering the workload he’s been given with injuries to Beagle and Sutter and he’s still taken yet another step forward in that department. Not bad for a player thought to have a ceiling as a 3C.

A "better guy" may not have the influence on this young team that he is.

On paper means nothing.  It's about chemistry, bonding, leadership, attitude, etc.  ESPECIALLY in a team that's rebuilding.

Money means nothing if the team plays as individuals.  He's a team player and that's obvious.  After having gone through a losing streak, it's a wonder these guys have any confidence or self esteem at all.  The guys who help keep it light are important.

I tend to agree, but his penalties are death to a team that cannot kill penalties.  Not as good as Dorsett, while prone to attracting the same kind of trouble/referees.

 P. Bergeron in the making.

Can you imagine what that line would do on rushes or broken plays?  Lol, they'd be a threat to score every shift.

The three a big, fast, skilled, and hyper competitive too.  I don't think the other team would touch the puck, except to fish it out of their net.

And none of them get tired easily, nor do they take stupid penalties.  They could play half the game while drawing the other team into penalty after penalty.  Canada is so deep now that you could actually ice this line as a real line, not just for power plays.

A real shame that Team Canada never had a chance to play recently... a changing of the guard would have taken place... imagine Crosby on the 2nd line... Rielly on D?  Marner as the 3rd line center lol?  Kadri to attract more opposition penalties?   Fastest, most skilled team we'd ever have had.  And probably the youngest.

Fans should love a guy like Roussel, hes a favorite of mine that's for sure. The passion and drive he displays will be infectious to the young guys.  Worth every penny as his style of game is rare around the league.  Lets be honest with ourselves we all like seeing a little crazy on the ice. Odjick was a nut and look how the fans exploded with Gino chants last night at the game when we saw him on screen. Hes looking great by the way, what a miraculous recovery.

I think Marner would play W and Bo would be a better 3C (or even 4C as the CDN team is very strong at C).  Not sure Kadri makes

the team.

Roussel is a terrific fit for the team right now.  Yeah, he does get a lot of penalties, but he also draws ++ penalties, which provides many scoring opportunities (I know the PP hasn't been great, but it does appear to be improving).

I do think he is similar to Dorsett in speed, great defensive game and great energy guy, but has a higher offensive upside.  He is more of a pest and will never be the fighter that Dorsett was

They were both rather late bloomers and appear to have a similar development track to their games.

Too many Leafs for my liking.

Some people have suggested the Canucks paid too much for Roussel, or the term was too long.

But at this point in the season I have to put this in the 'win' column for Benning.

----

Looking objectively at his play, this is what I see:

Negatives

-  Occasional stupid penalty from pushing the issue too much

Positives

-  Incredible hustle... this guy is a Pac Man on steroids... he never stops... never takes a game off... never is invisible.  CONSISTENT.

-  Great acceleration off a standing stop... maybe not the highest top speed, but he is excellent at breaking out of the zone and taking advantage of defensive gaffs.

-  Nice passing skills... good vision on the ice, and always looking to set his linemates up.

-  Decent shot... not the best finisher, but he has a lot of chances.

-  Great agitator, always on the other team, continually annoyance, continual yapping in their faces.

-  Fearless... willing to go at any time and basically with almost anyone.  Sticks up for his teammates instantly and without hesitation.

-  Capable of playing anywhere in the lineup... 1st line/4th line... very flexible... which is a great positive for a coach dealing with injuries.

-  Despite being a very physical player who is in the thick of things at all times, never seems to get injured... basically a gnarly dude.

----

Roussel now has 11 points on 26 games...  that translates to approx. 30 pts on the season.  When you combine that with all his other attributes, I think it is a  win.

29 years old this season... that makes him 33 when the contract is over... certainly not over the hill.

And this guy is EXACTLY what Playoff contenders want to acquire at the trade deadline....  Benning can trade him for assets any time he wants.

From my perspective this has turned into a great signing.   ;)

to me, he's Hansen with better hands

Yep, Benning was smart in that aspect, as well as, if I’m not mistaken, regarding NMC’s/NTC’s for the majority of signings. But nah, he doesn’t know how negotiate contracts

He’s paid a fair sum for his UFAs that’s for sure, guys that have proven their worth and can ask a premium to join a bottom or floundering team (Miller/Vrbata-the rest of them).  But he’s signed Horvat to a sensible if not team friendly contract with no clauses (bet you top dollar that if Bennings fired Horvat will get traded as the new GM puts his stamp on the team and tears it down), but every single one of his second contracts look good at his point (Bear, JV, Horva etc.) and that’s what matters he most when it comes negotiating new contracts.  It sickens me how much brown nosing and “learning experiences” Dumbass has pronounced in TO over Nylander, why would he say anything at all about it other than we are done moving forward etc...Benning looks good in those optics.   I see your sarcasm so no worries, this is pointed towards those on here that complain with every single contract, picking it apart like it’s their money or something.

Benning will be tested no doubt as a GM at his summer when it comes to Boeser,  at this point he doesn’t deserve top dollar (which to me is Taresenko money as that’s his closest comparable IF he scores close to 40 goals this year), but he’s shown enough to make him very rich.  5-7 million is his range for his next contract, depending on how many UFA years we buy and how many goals he scored...

Pettersson is a different animal, thankfully that’s not up for awhile.  A PPG rookie isn’t common these days so the team could be in for a 10 million player (again well half that enjoy your retirement Sundin and WTF were you thinking signing him for that much at that age anyways?!) the cap will keep going up so it won’t be too bad percentage wise....and the money will be available and then some.
