With injuries a thing in this sim, it may beneficial to not just select pure prospects since some may not be eligible to play in the NHL during the season. Example: LA doesn't have Michael Amadio, Alex Lintuniemi, or Peter Budaj on their main roster. But retaining guys in that vein would be good because it helps to build the organizational depth that would help in the case of injuries.
