Playoffs, could it happen?

VanGnome

Recommended Posts

Dallas and Colorado have losing records in their last 10, if they don’t get their acts together the Canucks will overtake them just by playing.500 hockey.

Playoffs are possible whether the Canucks are ready for it or not.

Might as well make the best of a good learning experience.

As I have posted "Shoud it"

I get the feeling that no one watches the playoffs if the Nucks are not in them, the one's that don't watch talk about making the playoffs like the team would do good, some of the posters that do watch know this group is nowhere near ready, too small, not good enough defence, no depth and almost a one person scoring threat.

So easy to take out Petterson, Boeser and Horvat and the team is a lamb being led to the slaughter and if lucky no really serious injuries like concussions, broken backs, separated shoulders, broken body parts from blocking a huge number of shots.

So here are some condensed hitting in 2017 and 2018 with some stats.

Watch, look Mom no whistles

Washington 24 games - 781 hits

Vegas - 20 g - 768 hits

TBL - 17 g - 514 hits

Jets - 17 g - 476 hits

Brashear was a horrible hockey player but an excellent ass kicker.

Who do you suggest JB goes after that fits the bill?

Brash a horrible hockey player? Are you on drugs?, i saw him score some highlight reel goals and crank some nice passes, the closest we have to that (who has room to improve) is Train and that's a big IF he comes back, all he has to do is either punch a guy or grab him and throw him to the ice and he did that with grown men like a lil rag doll.

A FULLY developed Tryamkin on the line on D would almost guarantee no one goes after petey and brock. Pretty much the same as when Chara is on the ice..

And just saying, he's improving as a player over there by a LOT so i hope we can get him after his contract is up which by the way is a good thing so he's not open season or a need to protect when seattle comes shopping but you get the idea now?  Oh and horrible players do not score goals like this.. just saying.. and he scored much better goals than that..

Hits this year:

Calgary  732

Nashville 948

San Jose 949

Minnesota 990

Winnipeg 1003

Dallas 1106

Vancouver 1115

Las Vegas  1412'

ermagerd....the Canucks are playoff readyz

Only 1115 in 51 games, that all, 1115 in 4 months? Washington's playoff hit rate would put them about 1660 hits and they are much, much bigger on average.

After this All Star break we have 31 games remaining,

IMHO we would need 90 points to secure a wild card spot, We are currently at 52 points after 51 games played.

We would need to go 19 and 12( 38 points or some equal combination with OT losses) to make it. I still like our chances

If we finish off the season with 19 or 20+ wins, we will be playing some pretty darn good hockey

you're predictable Guardian.

An honest response would be - oh, I'm surprised they're second in hits among the teams in playoff positions in the West.

Instead, you stick your head in the sand and double-down on a myth that this team - we're talking about the present here - doesn't hit.

I not only watch them, I usually am in a pool.

I think you keep insisting on something to prove you are right, however....there's a reason they PLAY for the cup and don't just award it.  Because any team can win it.  Sure...odds may line up in favour of teams, but it's not a certainty. and longshots do happen at times.  So you want your team to be in the mix, just in case.  Not rule them out because they probably won't.  The experience, alone, is invaluable for future reference for them.  You watch videos but you don't play the games..they do.  So it's important for them to get the feel of the playoffs and learn from them.

Yes, the ante is upped for playoffs, we get that.  Teams crashing and banging also take a toll in that...it's exhausting.  So toughness has to be balanced with resilience and durability and young guys may have a bit of an advantage in that.  We used to fear the big bad Bruins, Kings, etc. but the game is changing and there's speed and skill that can tire out the crash and bangers.

I believe you completely overlook a few factors (beyond "toughness") are are equally important...goaltending, health, officiating, luck.  So if those things swing your way as a team, you have a lot of things helping you.

Any team making it into the playoffs can get on a roll and momentum swing their way if the above noted things are in place.  You are so one dimensional in your thinking about the playoffs.

It's funny that you state all these things - "too small, not good enough defence, no depth and almost a one person scoring threat" but it's the same team playing in the playoffs that plays during the regular season.  They've had some success and, while not perfect, some of that was during injuries and proved that goaltending can offset other things.  That's a HUGE component to me..the goaltender.

"So easy to take out Petterson, Boeser and Horvat."...this part's comical.   Why would we take them out??  So you take out the top three on any team and it puts a different spin on them.  Love how you have to subtract key components of our team to make your theory work though.  I'd rather have a team that embraces a "sky's the limit" attitude than gloom and doom.  I think I can.  While I'm at it, add confidence to the list.  Streaks.  A team that's on a roll can really gather momentum and confidence while a team that starts to trend downward at the wrong time can create a whole lot of issues.  None of that is on paper or a stat that is consistent and can be measured.  Fate and luck are huge parts of this deal...with the timing of the good and bad in that crucial.

Go bet your house on a team that fits your criteria and checks all the boxes.  Bet you wouldn't.  There's a reason for that.

I think if were too focused on the expansion draft then were not focused enough on building a strong team.

I think we should be prepared to loose a Baertschi, Goldobin, Hutton, Stetcher or some other good but not core player.

once you accept we will likely loose a reliable 3rd liner fringe 2nd liner or a #4 D. The rest is how you prepare for that reality and turn the loss into an opportunity for someone ready to take the next step.

You cant let worrying about one guy paralyze you from doing what's best for the whole team.

Bring on Hughes get him some games elc be damned.

I'm so long winded (blabbermouth).

But I do have to say that part about noone watching the playoffs (but you and elite crowd who know more than the rest of us) is steeped in arrogance.

Seriously.  If this thing was so predictable there'd be no point in watching.

Guardian:  can you list your top 5 for probable playoff success this year for me?  I'd like you to do so.

Thing is...you'll likely be able to come back with an "aha, told you so".  I'm ok  with that, I sort of even suspect it.  But IF it goes the other way...then my aha moment is so much more meaningful.  I'm willing to stand behind that one.   I hope for playoffs and success and it's ok to do so.  Each and every year...not without the risk of being wrong, but  with the hope of being right.  It's a bit of downer to just pack it in at this point for me based on trajectories.

It depends how much these young guys want it.

The young guys need to show us another gear down the stretch.

Full team effort will be needed, though.

Goalies need to both be above average.

The veterans need to start scoring some.  Littlethinger. Sutter.  Beagle. Roussel.

Expecting one, maybe 2 trades for and involving D.  One top 6D out/one blue chip forward out.

~30% chance the Canucks make it, at this time.

We need to go streaking.  19-11 might get us in.

Good response to someone who didn’t watch him play or didn’t do his research.  He was actually a decent junior player with some good hands/penchant for scoring goals both pretty and gritty ones.  He was a better skater and player than Odjick, and as was correctly stated, a serious ass kicker.  Could he survive in today’s NHL?  Doubtful, as no one would challenge him and aside from being a nuclear deterrent he wouldn’t do much but skate around and bang for a few minutes when played.  I do remember that he was reluctant the first couple years, but once he was traded to us he opened up and led the league in fights (something like 30, all of them wins and back then he was all offense), and Odjick was sent packing.   He developed quite the reputation, and had a pretty successful career as an enforcer.  I remember watching a game live when did a number on Odgers, while rookie Parker who was revered at the time as the next heavyweight champ had a great scrap with McAllister who held his own.   Those games were always exciting, even when we lost.

Not talking about the soft season.

Not any playoff team can win the grail, if so gambling casino's would be going bankrupt remember last year, Vegas had the casino's really worried, it does happen but good teams usually go farther hence "odds".

At the same time, aren't you someone who has bashed Vancouver for bringing in the gritty veterans, signing Guddy and has been less than keen on seeing Virtanen in the lineup over a player more like Ehlers or Nylander?

I think your total lack of appreciation for the fact that Vancouver now has a team that while not a Winnipeg is a team more than capable of playing a playoff style if it needs to.   No question someone like EP40 could use a year or two more under his belt physically but unless you simply didn't care to follow him last year, the SEL playoffs were VERY hard hitting with intense physicality and he somehow manged to end up without hospitalization or a funeral.    You seem to think that because they play for Vancouver, that they will wilt and disappear.

Sorry, while I agree with you they are not quite a playoff team (but seem to h*ll bent on proving me wrong), to say that they will somehow be "beaten up" speaks more to some projected insecurity than what would be a reality with this team.

Are you for real? I've been watching since day one of this franchise and brash did ok and there's no way did he look out of place plus a nuclear deterrant is exactly what brock and petey need as did the sedins..

Not even close, I don't think Eriksson was a good signing like you apparently do, Guddy, might as well signed Lucic and a UFA big guy for defence, Lucic signed with Edmonton instead.

On Virtanen you are totally wrong about my sentiments, not even close, obviously trolling with that comment.

It will be interesting to see in the upcoming week how they do, it will be a big challenge in my opinion especially with the Canucks being gameless for 10 straight days, then literally playing 6 games in 9 days, and those 6 games are not going to be easy games some tough teams to play. I've questioned the scheduling this season as the NHL really did a bad job on that this year in my opinion, but this February is going to be a big test for this team lots of games and not much rest at all, having 10 days off and no games is obviously nice to have and help players heal up, but when they're going from that many days off to playing every 2nd day all of a sudden again it might catch up to them, time will tell but this month is going to be a big test for this team imo if they are a playoff team or not.

Can't keep up with your mood swings and changes of opinion.   I will try and pay more attention.   Apologies.   :)
