[Waivers] Mike McKenna (Flyers claim McKenna)

Kid has been given a chance of a lifetime.

... and sometimes this is all a kid needs.

We stole a young goalie with a lifetime winning record from a Devils organization steep in goalie tradition and deep in prospects.

Off-loading Neilson is a win in itself. Why then would we want an ahl lifer like McKenna?

Gaining this Alex guy's potential is just a bonus, and he gets the once in a lifetime chance to improve with great coaching, in front of some of the best fans in all hockey.

Gotta love Johnson and Cull, with fingers on the pulse they're reacting well to our Canuck's enforced juggling.  Lucky we are, to have them.

Canucks should have locked us into a ten-year deal in Utica.

A warm body for Utica now that we called up their goalie.  We're in better than a 10 year deal in Utica; we own the team.  It would be madness to move the Comets.

McKenna was picked by the Flyers, who were +/ - 3rd in the queue. Does JB get to know if any 'lower' team also put in a claim ? If he does have this info, it makes the choices he has to make re Utica so much easier. If Philly is expecting one of their 27 injured goalies back and no one else put in a claim, JB just has to put everything on pause for a week or two !

Utica has signed a goalie to a PTO currently, so they are certainly just waiting for McKenna to hit waivers again. If another team claims him again before we can, then we will simply continue to wait. We do not need to waste an asset for an AHL goalie.

I'd explore the option of seeing what Steve Mason is up to as it looks like he hasn't been playing with any team this year and hasn't announced a retirement or anything as far as I know. Perhaps this would be an opportunity for him to try and make a comeback. Another option potentially is to see if there is some euro goalie that has an out clause and wants to see if they would like to give it a shot here (eg Godla). Or maybe even seeing if Toronto is willing to loan Garteig as we are loaning them Gagner, but they have their own goalie situation going on right now. If all else fails then continue to sign PTOs and simply ride it out until McKenna hits waivers again and we can claim and send straight to Utica.

I mean, he was good. But his time with us pales in comparison to Hoffman's time in San Jose. Talk about vastly overrating players that played here RNT.

Madness to move our farm team to Abbotsford!

God forbid we have calls up who can drive up in 30 mins and not fly for a day.

Yep, let's expose our prospects to a grueling road schedule instead of practicing and development.  Let's also give our media easier access to those kids.  Utica works well.

Except that for 41 games we are travelling. When we are out east, it is easy for Utica guys to come into the lineup during a call up. It will take a lot longer than 30 minutes to call them up when we are out east.
