[Speculation] Interest in Michael Del Zotto

MDZ is a +3 player for us this year in 23 gp...I was surprised to see that

He's not as bad as we like to make him seem. The memes are fun, but this D core can barely ice two top 4 D-men. Tanev is one dimensional and barely would constitute being a top 4 guy. The other is Edler. A lot of us want to blame MDZ and Pouliot for our woes but they are being asked to do more than they are capable of. We are seeing similar things from Guddy (seeing a good few people start roasting his game), he's in our top 4 and likely isn't good enough to be there. The only time he looked like he truly belonged in the top 4 was when he was with Eagle.

and that's a relatively meaningless cherry-pick unfortunately that lip sticks MDZ's season.

first, he's played with Stecher (+10) and Tanev (+2 with 37.5% ozone starts).

MDZ is +3, with 52.7% ozone starts playing with a couple guys who have better goal metrics = doesn't really tell us much, if anything.  MDZ's numbers are worse than both those partners, so clearly, they've performed better without him than with him.

MDZ has 4 pts in 23 games - actually a slower scoring pace than Gudbranson, who's role is nowhere near as tilted towards 'play-driving'.

Del Zotto has been ok after the first stretch where he was simply awful and earned his spot in the press box - but there's nothing about his performance that has earned him anything other than a spot star here and there - really the best 'metric' he has going for him are the 89 hits he's thrown, but unfortunately, even there, he got caught terribly out of position on numerous occasions early in the season, so chasing hits/high hit totals isn't always a positive result either, particularly if your coverage is so suspect.   He's been better lately imo, but the problem for him is that so has Ben Hutton, so he hasn't managed to take back that roster spot.

The old eye test tells me Del Zotto is really slow, without the puck.  I don’t if he’s not reading the play, but he’s not getting to where he needs to be soon enough.

Without EP.  Their biggest minute guys are so bad in their own zone MDZ playing like the useless pylon that he is would be an improvement.    Reilly is such a huge liability defensively that he should be in the press box until he realizes that he needs to learn how to actually play defense.

Reilly is a D man at over a point per game.

Your "hockey analysis" is to put him in the press box.

Keep your day job.  :picard:

Because of his play in his own zone, not the other team's.  A coach who actually forced him to play like an NHLer in the defensive zone would be doing the team a huge favour.

I simply don't have any tolerance for a defenseman who can't play any defense, regardless of offensive output.  Either play defense or move to forward.

PPG?   Ok.

Still a mediocre defenseman at best.  Lots of great point getting defensemen out there.

But they can't keep the puck out of their own net, which translates into to no playoff success
