He's got all the ingredients imo. He's very mentally tough - has given up a lot of early goals in games the past few years and always battles back - very rarely have we ever seen a meltdown from Markstrom. And that is consistent with his Calder run. He's highly intelligent - and has his ego in check - as is obvious in his interviews - he has a very solid, team-first perspective and is undoubtedly very well like among his team-mates. I've never seen a moment of bad body language out of Markstrom, where he shows his disappointment with his team-mates. Moreover, he has once called out team-mates in general - in a leadership moment. He's big, he's athletic, he moves exceptionally well / is very quick for a guy his size - and he has really developed his economy of movement. No reason why he couldn't become the player he now is - he had all the tools and signs - and as is often the case with big goaltenders, it can take some time to develop into a #1 at the NHL level. Really have to credit management and the coaching staff for how they've brought him along.
RogersTowell
Markstrom has had a good run recently, but will need to keep it up until the end of the season to win me over. Pettersson is my mvp for now and is likely the franchise player for the next 10-20 years.

But I have seen many a goalie put up a great 20 game stretch (or even a fantastic season - Jim Carey, Andrew Raycroft) and come back down to reality in a hurry. Markstrom has yet to do anything Alex Auld didn't accomplish. Let's hope he stays the course.
panelguy
The crowd goes wild for every save Demko makes, should give Marky the same support.

Even in his prime, Kirk McLean had a lengthy period where he'd let in an early goal regularly and then settle down. There are worse problems to have (ahem, Cloutier, or present day Cory Schneider with Steve Blass Disease), especially if you can buckle down and Grant Fuhr it the rest of the way. Markstrom seems to be in that zone...let's hope he keeps it up.
Where'd Luongo?
It's the smelling salts he hits after the anthem, ever since he started doing that he stopped letting in those quick ones.

Phil_314
The Sharks were moving the puck well; I doubt the speed of the game would catch him off guard like it did Mikey (beaten upper glove, fluke goal, pulled to one side). Probably a 3-2 or 4-2 game if Marky was in. Agreed that he and Petey should share the team MVP.

There may be many reasons for that both in his control and beyond his control, but I wouldn't call that a particularly great stat and certainly not one worthy of MVP contention. I'm tickled pink about Markys recent play as well, but it's still a small sample size imo. Sv% is a decent stat for goaltending performance, but it has its limits. Not all shots are equal quality. The Canucks, in particular, bleed scoring chances and high danger chances at a very high rate. Given the difficulty of the shots he’s facing, and the shockingly poor defence he’s had in front of him much of the year, Marky’s 0.913 is actually pretty amazing. Viewed through another statistical lens (wins above replacement or “WAR”), Markstrom has performed very well (top-5 in the league, in fact): (Stole this chart from The Athletic) EDIT: And since I’m stealing from the Athletic anyway, here’s some great stuff from tonight’s Athletties (Botchford): Jacob Markstrom was a beast. It may have been Ian Clark who unleashed his Kracken, but you don’t evolve like Markstrom has over the course of a season unless you are incredibly motivated to be great. And, boy, Markstrom was great tonight. He kept a fragile group of skaters in front of him in the game with 43 saves, half of which were either on the rush or from high-danger areas in and around and through the slot. A year ago, the Canucks would have been clowned on a night like this. They would have been stuffed into a cannon with white pancake makeup and a red curly wig and been shot out to Boulder. Markstrom, however, not only kept the Canucks from being humiliated, he nearly won them the game. “He’s unbelievable,” Alex Biega said. “I’ve played with him for years now. I was with him on a team that went to the Calder Cup finals. “Now I’m seeing that same goalie in the NHL. He just captures game. “You see that first period?” Unfortunately. “It could have been 4-1 or even 5-1 easily. He bailed us out. And that’s how he was in Utica. He can just take control of a game. “There’s been this evolution of his game where he is now doing that in the NHL. “You know if it’s a 2-on-1 or a breakaway, he’s going to make that stop.” There were so many saves to choose from but I can’t shake this one and the way he reads the play in traffic, fights through a Roussel screen and a stick to his right pad, getting himself in position to make a lunging desperation stop. BIEGA: “Obviously, Clark is in his ear all the time but he’s worked really hard at this. “He knows guys like (Tanev and Edler) are out. He takes great pride in his mental and physical preparation. “He’s been bailing us out big time.” Markstrom is the MVP right now. And maybe Ian Clark for co-MVP? What a great hire by JB. People can see now why I was going full hype-man for Clark on these boards, when I first learned he might become available. And then high-fiving anyone and everyone when the hire actually happened.
