Brian Burke on changing the Draft Lottery Format

Recommended Posts

Burke is the best combination of entertainment value and straight-shooter / unedited commentary out there.

This morning - again - great stuff - saying that guys like Kesler are miserable, but tolerated because they take their misery with them onto the ice.

Unfortunately I think it seriously limited Kesler's potential.  His lack of 'emotional intelligence' seems to have spilled over into the kinds of decisions he'd make on the ice - notoriously unable to make linemates better, played 'angry' to the point it stunted him a lot of the time - squeezed his stick, forced hopeless wristers from other time zones instead of moving the puck - had a real lack of vision and creativity....Still made a whole lot of his talent, and worked hard, but you have to wonder what he might have been if he'd been aware of his weakest links.

Thanks to the bloody Oilers tanking every year, the lottery is now a sham. If it wasn't, they would exploit it on TSN and get the viewers to tune in. Make a big deal out of it. All in the name of ratings.

50 years and the Canucks have never won the #1. NJ just won it twice in the last three years. This method is not working.

We've also never been last place, and wouldn't have got a #1 pick anyways. At least we have a chance now with the lotto.

It's working exactly as intended, so terms couldn't intentionally lose and stack top talent like Edmonton. Cutting off the lottery at top 5 will just create the same end of season problem the Oilers mastered - the bottom teams outside the playoffs will start trying to out-lose each other to get into the bottom 5 once playoffs are out of reach.
