if that option/tool is to be used

I dont think Marner would take an offer to leave Toronto... I honestly believe he would accept less to stay and they will find a way to make it happen. Hometown kid... There's no way he leaves.

They most likely regret signing Marleau now...

 

Dubas prolly shold have shipped out Nylander when he had the shot... maybe the holdout tied his hands... but there is his salary

The Marner situation:

 

I think a smart approach might be to do as follows:

 

1) Let another team make a huge RFA offer sheet to Marner.

 

2) Toronto *begrudgingly* matches the offer.

 

3) Being the “good samaritan” that Benning is, he makes an offer to Toronto for Marner that makes sense for both sides.  

 

Benning already has a good relationship with Dubas and so there’s no point ruining that with a predatory offer sheet.    Predatory offer sheets can significantly damage one’s rep around the league as well (ie old boys club mentality amongst GM’s).  

 

Let some other team do ‘1’ and ‘2’.  If no one does, then we can skip straight to step #3 in the above.

If they get into cap trouble it won’t be a signed Marner that they move.
