The 'swarm': How a subset of Sanders supporters use hostile tactics to drown out critics

https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/07/politics/bernie-sanders-social-media-attacks-invs/index.html

CNN’s blind hatred for Sanders borders on obsession. They’re clearly the mouthpiece for Clinton and the rest of the Democratic establishment looking to keep the evils of socialism (outside of fire departments, the military, community centers, and other horrendous communist ideals) away from the golden calf of capitalism.

I can’t speak for CNN, but in some of these cases Sanders had to personally intervene.

I decided to check our Sanders reddit section since they have 400k plus members and it’s quite a place.

No other candidate has that kind of following.

So you're saying Sanders is personally stepping in to ensure that people who support him actually act civilized instead of...the other types we see?

How awful, those are garbage leadership qualities

Sanders is not a Democrat, so why should the party and their media support him?

Sanders has a loyal mob. He might be the guy to get it done. He is easy to understand, big, wild and fearless. I feel that if he is the guy, traditional dem voters will support him regardless of if they wanted someone else. Plus he has that mob I mentioned, that many took 2016 voting off.

Very loyal, their reddit page is crazy, no other candidate has that kind of following.

Not even Trump, it’s very cult like.

Doesn't matter what the traditional Dems do.  What matters are the independents.

James Carville went off on Bernie and the Dems for their current performance lately.  Was kinda funny.

Yup, and he didn't get much support from the RNC before/during the primaries.

If Bernie somehow becomes the Dem candidate, the party won't have much choice and will give him support at that point.

The_Donald on reddit is extreme cult like lol

Or more like a non-stop Trump rally atmosphere.. yhuge.. no breaks for those patriots. Plus the subreddit is “quarantined” which is hilarious.

Sometimes I can't tell if you're serious, or just trying to throw shade at Sanders because you don't like him for... reasons, I guess. Only relevant criticism I've heard so far is that he's old, but I guess he's got crazy hair, is loudly outspoken, and says things that scare those hoping to preserve the status quo, so clearly not fit for office.

Sanders has a strong social media presence because he appeals to the millennial generation. It's only natural that they display their support in a medium they're most familiar with. It's also a generation that is clearly desperate to affect change in their society, because they see their future literally being destroyed for short term financial gain. Unlike many jaded grown ups, they recognize that the economy won't matter when there's no environment left where humans can exist. Society says we need another pipeline, but they'd rather stop ocean acidification that's dissolving crab shells and killing biodiversity. Society says we need to grow the GDP infinitely, they see the need to save pollinators, so our flora doesn't die out. Their future, our kids' future, is in peril, and they're the only ones who see it as a bigger priority than the economy. And Sanders is the only one to speak their language, and be in a position to possibly have the power to do something about this growing calamity.

Seriously, not even Trump? Have you spoken to your average Trumpkin? The ones who excuse his lies, his slurs, his racist comments, his crimes, his mockery of a disabled man, his completely unpresidential behavior, his being a joke on the world stage, etc. etc. etc. The goddamn Republican senators have admitted that he broke the law, that he did wrong, yet his supporters still insist he's done nothing wrong. And you think Sanders' supporters are worse? Come on man. Democrats are always willing to eat their own, just ask Al Franken. Sanders would be no different.

First paragraph, I do feel that some of his supporters are enthralled with his personality.

Dressing up like him or their kids, tattoos, 50 bumper stickers on their car etc.

To me it looks like like cult of personality, I have met people lthat had the same types of feelings for Hoxa, Nehru, Tito etc.

I would like to see younger candidate win, Biden is over the hill and Sanders will be 79.

The way to win is to attack the economy and that is going to be hard.

Most people care about how is their 401k doing, or individual investments.

Every single Union in Midwest as well as pension plan has money invested in stock market.

Yes lot of people don’t have any investments so they might not care.

Bernie will be portrayed as a guy that will destroy health care companies, go after Wall Street,  big banks, big pharma, open borders, let felons vote, stop fracking, take your guns away, force Medicare on you etc.

It doesn’t mean jack $&!# that some of those ideas are actually decent.

Once the big boogie man comes out in form of socialism and comparison to USSR, Cuba, China etc. show is over.

Your second paragraph is well thought out and looks like it was spoken from the heart, I have nothing to add to that.

Last paragraph, Trump hard core supporters are motivated by fear, racism, hatred, intolerance against blacks, Mexicans, immigrants, Democrats etc. Their motivation is very primal, very different from ideals that motivate Sanders crowd. They don’t care what he says or does as long as he is sticking it to the libs.

I live in a state where last Republican won electoral college 40 years ago, I do know lot of Trump voters.

Very few can carry an intelligent conversation to explain why they voted for him.

Yes, Trump is a Republican.  He was also a Democrat at one time.  He changed political party 5 times.

http://thesmokinggun.com/documents/celebrity/trump-a-republican-for-now-908431

Here is a history of Trump’s voter registration since 1987:

* JULY 1987: Trump registers for the first time from his Fifth Avenue penthouse. The real estate developer, 41 at the time, reports having previously been registered from his boyhood home in Queens (though his prior party affiliation is unclear). Trump enrolls as a REPUBLICAN.

* OCTOBER 1999: Trump dumps the GOP and enrolls as a member of the INDEPENDENCE PARTY.

* AUGUST 2001: Trump enrolls as a DEMOCRAT.

* SEPTEMBER 2009: After eight years as a Democrat, Trump returns to the REPUBLICAN PARTY.

* DECEMBER 2011: Trump lasts two years before he again abandons the party of Ronald Reagan. He eschews the GOP in favor of siding with no party. On his registration form, “The Apprentice” star checks off the box marked “I DO NOT WISH TO ENROLL IN A PARTY.”

* APRIL 2012: Trump registers as a REPUBLICAN.

Sanders is registered as an Independent.  The Democratic Party support because him because his political views aligned with a some in the Democratic Party - mainly the progressive wing.
